THOMAS E SMITH, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
NOTE-BOOK COVER AND SUPPORT.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS EDWARD SMITH, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, and resident of London, England, have invented a certain new and useful Note'Book Cover and Support, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention has reference to an improved. combination holder or cover and stand for notebooks, loose leaves and the like, the object being the construction of an article having the outward appearance of an ordinary notebook which may be readily adapted as a stand or copyholder by simply opening out certain members as hereinafter described.
To illustrate the invention there is ap pended hereto a sheet of drawings showing one embodiment of the said invention, and wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view thereof-- device opened out; and Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof-device partly collapsed.
The device comprises primarily a back portion and a front portion constituting a cover or holder for a notebook or loose leaves which may be attached in position in said cover in any suitable manner. The front cover a is preferably of fairly stiff material with a certain degree of flexibility which is hingedly secured to the back portion and may be thrown over the back (as seen in Fig. 1) when it is desired to read or refer to the matter contained in the notebook or the like.
Now, the essential feature of the said invention consists in the construction of the back of the cover. It comprises two stiff members 7) and 0 hinged at the top where the front cover a; aforesaid is hinged. The device so far as above described is thus in the form of three fiat members a, Z), and c including the front cover a hinged together at one common hinge (Z. The back cover (which will be referred to as a composite back cover) constitutes the stand proper, the two stiif members I) and 0 being adapted to open out and form supporting members, and when in this position opening to too great an extent is obviated by a flexible connecting member 6 attached preferably to the lower extremities of the two back members a and 0. Thus, the forward stiff back member 6 Specification of Letters Patent.

may hold a notebook or the like, while the rear stiff back member 0 acts as a leg or support. In closing up the device, the front cover portion a is thrown over the notebook or the like and the two stiff members 6 and c of the composite back cover closed together, whereupon the flexible connector 6 collapses (preferably by one single fold g) upwardly therebetween.
In the drawings 7" indicates a means for holding loose leaves, but any other means may be employed, or means substituted for holding made-up notebooks.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. A combination notebook cover and support including a front cover, a composite back cover comprising two hinged flaps connected by a flexible connector located near the bottom extremities of the said hinged flaps and adapted to collapse between said hinged flaps, the composite back cover being hinged to the said front cover.
2. A combination notebook cover and support including a front cover, a composite back cover comprising two hinged flaps connected by a flexible connector located near the bottom extremities of the hinged flaps and adapted by a single fold to collapse upwardly in between said hinged flaps, the composite back cover being hinged to said front cover.
3. A combination notebook cover and sup port including a front cover, a composite back cover comprising two supporting members hinged at their meeting ends and having a flexible connector at their opposite ends, the composite back cover being hinged to the front cover, and means for attaching a notebook carried by one of the hinged supporting members of the said composite back cover.
i. A combination notebook cover and support comprising a pair of relatively stifi' supporting members having a hinged connection at their upper meeting edges, a flexible connector attached to the lower extremities of said supporting members adapting them to be spread apart to an inclined position, said connector adapted to fold upwardly between the inner walls of said members when they are not in supporting position, a cover hinged to the supporting mem- In testimony whereof I have afiixed my bers at their uppejr meeting edges, and a clip signature in presence of two witnesses. carried y one o the supporting members for holding a note book or loose leaves, said SMITH clip arranged so as to be shielded by the cover when the latter is folded toward thesupporting member carrying the clip.
