front grate-bar.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID S. WATSON, OF ASHEVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA.
.FENDER FOR OPEN FlRE-GRATES.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 423,843, dated March 18, 1890. Application filed October 24, 1889- Serial No. 328,067. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DAVID S. \VATSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Asheville, in the county of Buncombe and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fenders for Open Fire-Grates; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to fenders for open fire-grates. Heretofore fenders, sometimes called blowers, have been made of sheetiron to fit the opening of the fire-place above the grate, and have been provided with a central handle, whereby the blower might be bodily removed as soon as the fire was fairly started. The inner side of the blower necessarily becomes coated with soot that is likely to be jarred off where the blower is set down when not in service, and the sooty side is likely to come in contact with clothing, &c.
To obviate these objections-to the removable blower or fender, the object of my invention is to provide a fender whose operation is mechanical, which will be a permanent and ornamental fixture around the fireplace, and which will have many advantages over the old blower.
To this end my invention consists in the construction and combination of parts forming a fender for open fire-grates, hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure I is a front view of a fire-grate, show ing my invention in service. Fig. II shows a vertical section from front to rear through the whole fire-place at the line as, Fig. I.
5 represents any common fire-grate; 6, the brick-work of the chimney-jamb at both sides of and above the grate.
7 represents a pair of doors, which I fit to slide between guides 8 and 9, and they constitute a prominent feature of my invention.
10 represents two facings from the side jambs, and 11 a similar facing above the opening ofthe fire-place. The slide-bar 9 passes behind and is fixed firmly to the facings 10 at a height just above the upper The slide-bar 8 is located above the opening of the fire-place, and is fixed to both the side facings 10 and the upper facing 11. These facings may be made of any suitable material-such as Russia sheetiron-which is also suitable for the doors.
13 represents knobs by which the doors may be slid to and fro. The facing may be provided with any required depth of side and top boxing 12, easily trimmed by the tinners snip-shears to fit to any old fire frame or jamb, or the device may be readily built in with the house. These doors sliding directly across the grate have the advantage of being adjusted to fit all conditions. Theymay be opened a little midway, or one may be opened and the other left closed, when some open door of the house or some direction of the wind would cause the smoke to rush out if the full front were opened. The same adjustments may also'be made to direct the outflow of heat to one side when so desired. The soot on the back of these doors can never be seen nor accidentally brushed against, and the doors are neatly concealed behind the facings when not in service. It is cheap, ornamental, and highly serviceable.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I believe to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is the following:
1. A pair of doors fitted to cover the front of a chimney fireplace above the grate and adapted to slide on ways, a pair of slideways located across the fire-place, one above andthe other near the top of the grate, and a pair of facings located at the sides of the fire-place, the said slideways being fixed to the said facings and adapted to guide the doors behind the facings, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, with the side jambs, upper cross portion, and grate of a chimney fire-place, of facings covering the said jambs and cross portion, slideways crossing in front of the fire-place near the top of the grate and near the top of the fire-place and secured at their ends to the rear sides of the facings, and doors fitted to slides upon the said slideways, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I atfix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
