' C. E. HEWETT.
PITMAN CONNECTION. No. 420,791. Patented Peb. l4, 1890;
P l@ Mik/W UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.,
CHARLES E. HEIVETT, OF BRANDON, VERMONT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 420,791, dated February 4, 1890.
Application filed .Tune 22, 1889. Serial No. 315,282. (No model.)
To all whom, t may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. HEWETT, of Brandon, in the county of Rutland and State of Vermont, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pitman-Connections; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention is an improved connection for the pitman used to operate a gang of saws for sawing stone; and its object is to provide a simple connection, economial to make, easily applied, and which will sustain a minimum amount of wear in use.
The invention consists in the details of construction hereinafter particularly described.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective View of the pitman-connect-ion as applied to the end of a saw-gang. Fig. 2 is a section of the same, and Fig. 3 is a sectional detail View of the pivoting-block and other parts.
In the drawings, A represents a bracket, which is securely fastened to the gang in any suitable manner. Its front face is recessed, the recess extending through the bottom, leaving a thin shell covering the top, so as to protect the working parts from the sand or any other obstruction which would tend to interfere with the free workin g of the pitmanconnection.
The pitman, which is of ordinaryconstruction, is secured in place between the ends of a strap a, which is preferably made in one piece and of elongated U shape in side elevation. In the bottom of the U is fitted a steel block c, which has projecting ears d extending upon each side, the block being of greater width than the strap, and these ears prevent any lateral displacement. Longitudinal displacement of the block is prevented by means of a plug e, fitting in a slot in the upper and lower portions of the strap and having overhanging lips to prevent displacement. Between this plug, which has a rear inclined face, and the steel block I drive in a wedge, which thus holds the block securely in place. The block is made of steel, and yhas upon each side countersinks, which serve as bearings for the ends of screw-threaded steel pins, which pass through the side walls ff of the bracket, and thus serve as the journals of the block. The pins are shown at g, and they are provided with jam-nuts h for holding them securely in place.
I claim as my inventionl. A pitman-connection consisting of a strap for connection to the pitman, a steel block held between the limbs of said strap, a bracket having a recess to receive the strap and block, and steel bearing-pins projecting through the side Walls of the bracket, substantially as described. j
2. In combination with a recessed bracket, a pitman, a U-shaped strap connected thereto, a steel block held by said strap and having projecting ears to prevent lateral displacement, and steel bearing-pins for said block, substantially as described.
3. In combination with a recessed bracket, a pitman, a strap connected to said pitman, having a closed end, a steel block held in said Y end, a plug andwedge for holding said block in place, and steel bearing-pins for said block, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES E. HEWETT. Witnesses:
CHAs. H. J oYcE, L. H. VALIQUETTE.
