Description

N. DE TELESCHEFF. Machine for Punching and Cutt ing Metal.
Patented April 26, 1864.
fnv-enia r,
N'rrhn TATES NICOLAS DE TELESOHEFF, OF ST. PETERSBURG, RUSSIA, ASSIGNOR TO EZRA JENKS COATES, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
IMPROVEMENT lN MACHINES FOR CUTTING AND PUNCHINGMETALS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. d2,53 ll, dated April 26, 1864.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NICOLAS DE TELE- SOHEFF, of N o. 16 M ala'ia Morska'ia, St. Peters burg, in the Empire of Russia, at present residing at No. 24 Rue de Dunkerque, Paris, in France, captain of artillery of the Russian Imperial Guard, have invented certain new' and useful Improvements in Machinery for Punching and Cutting Metals 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same,,reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which-- Figure 1 is a vertical section of the apparatus; Fig. 2, a front view of the same; Fig. 3, a plan of the horizontal lever f. Fig. 4 represents in vertical section the frame of a portable apparatus for punching only. Fig. 5 is a front view of the same.
A, Figs. 1, 2, is a cast-iron frame, carrying at its upper part, a, the shears b l), and at its lower part, a, the punch c and bed-plate c. The lower shear-blade, b, and the punch care mounted on vertical slide-bars d and c, operated by the horizontal levers f j one of which is seen apart in Fig. 3.
g g are pivots or trunnions fixed to the slide-bars dc, and bearing on the fore ends of the levers f f. h is a movable axle placed between the levers, and serving as point of rotation to the coupling-hooks n a, by which these levers are connected with the slide-bars. In the tapped bearings k k, adjusted to the hind extremities of the levers, passes a screw, '1 i, threaded to the right over one half of its length, and to the left on the other half, and provided at the top with a hand bar or wheel of. any suit-able form. v
0 p q 0 p q are gorges formed in the plates on m, the slide-bars d e, and the framea a, to receive the conical keys I Z, by which one of the two slide-bars is kept stationary while the other is at work.
To cut metal with the machine constructed as above, the keys I l are inserted, as seen in Fig. 1, in the lower gorges, 0'19 q, thus securing in position the punching mechanism. The screw 1' i is then turned from left to right, and by its action on the cylindrical bearings k k causes the hind extremities of the levers ff to separate, while the front ends close on each other in turning on the axle h. The traction exerted in this move ment on the pivot g carries down. the slide bar cl, thus allowing the metal to be passed between the. shears. The screw isthen reversed, the hind extremities of the levers reclose, the fore ends reopen, and by their press ure on the pivot g force upward on the metal the slide-bar with its blade.
For punching, the keysl l, withdrawn from the gorges 0'10 q to free the slide-bar c, are set in 0 p q, and the shearing mechanism being thus secured in its turn, the levers f f are alternately opened and closed under the action of the screw in the manner above described.
Fig. 4 represents in vertical section the frame of a portable apparatus for punching only. Fig. 5 is a front view of the same. In this arrangement the shearing mechanism is entirely suppressed and replaced by a fixed cross-bar, .on which is mounted the trunnion g.
'The other parts of the machine are in all points similar to those described above, and shown in thepreceding figures of the drawings.
Having now described the nature of the said improvements and the manner of carrying them into effect, I would have it understood that I do not confine myself to the precise details of construction above laid down, as these may obviously be modified without deviating from the principles or characteristic features of the invention; but
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The application to the construction of punching and cutting machinery of the levers ff, in combination with the slide-bars d e and the screw it, the whole arranged and operated in connection with the auxiliary mechanism, in manner substantially as herein set forth, and shown in the figures of the annexed drawm s.
a N. DE TELESOHEFF.
