IMPRO'VED MACHINE FOR CUTTING TOBACCO.

This invention relates to anew and improved machine for cutting tobacco for chewing and smoking purposes; and it consists in the employment or use of a rotating cuttingwheel in connection with a press and feeding mechanism, all arranged as hereinafter fully shown and described, whereby tobacco may be cnt in a rapid and perfect manner.
A A represent two uprights or standards, on which a cast-iron bed, B, is permanently secured. This bed is composed of a bottom and sides, forming a sort of an oblong box. At the front part of this box the sides extend upward a considerable distance above the other parts, as shown at b b, and are connected at their upper ends by a cross-bar, a, the center of which is drilled and tapped to receive a screw, O, which is provided with a handle, D, at its upper end, and bears at its lower end against a plate, E, which is fitted between the sides b b of the box B, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
F represents a follower, which is a square block fitted in the bed or box B, and having a screw-rod, Gr, working in it through a nut, c, said screw-rod passing through the end of the bed or box, and having upon it a ratchet, H, into which a pawl, d, on a bar, I, catches. The bar I is fitted loosely on the screw-rod G and rests upon a cam, J, of elliptical form,which is placed on one end of a shaft, L, the 'bearings e of the latter being at the outer side of the bed or box y B. The shaft Lis parallel with the bed or box B. The opposite end of the shaft L hasa wheel, L', upon it, to which two knives, M M, are attached, said knives heilig of slightlycurved form and working over the end of the bed or box B when the shaft L is rotated.
N is a fly-wheel, which is placed on the shaft L adjoining the wheel L', and it may be cast with it.
The operation is as follows: The tobacco to be cutis placed in the bed or box B underneath the plate E, and in front of the follower F, and the tobacco is pressed or compacted by turning the screw() and thereby forcing down the plate E. (See Fig. 3.) The shaft Lis then turned by any convenient power, and the knives M M cut the tobacco as they pass over the end of the bed or box B, the tobacco bc ing fed forward to the knives each time a knife passes it in consequence of the cam J actuating the pawl-hnr `I and causing the pawl to move the ratchet H and turn the screw-rod G,
which moves the follower F.
Thus by this simple arrangement tobacco may be cut rapidly and in a perfect manner.
We would remark that the feed may be va ried by placing different-sized cams on the shaft L.
We claim ns new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination and arrangement of parts substantially as described, and consisting of the rotating cutting-wheel moving at right angles to the feed, the feeding arrangement, con sisting of the shaft, cam, pawl, ratchet, feedscrew, and follower, and the press-box arrangement, consistingof the sides and follower, the
latter depressed by a single screw-shaft, C, passing through the bridge-nut ct under the rotation of the wheel D.
