Description

(No Model.)
.B0AL. DEFLEGTING PLATE FOB OPEN STOVES ORv GRATES.
No. 425,289. PatentedApr. 8, 1890.
I gmmwiioz q viiwadmo UNITED STATES iHTENT FFICE.
STANI-IOPE BOAL, OF PIQUA, OHIO.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 425,289, dated April 8, 1890.
Application filed October 28, 1889. Serial No. 328,367, (No model.)
zen of the United States, and a resident of Piqua, in the county of Miami and State of Ohlo, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Deflecting-Plates for Open Stoves and Grates, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the construction of a combined damper and deflecting plate placed over the fire and behind the upper front.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a deflecting dan1per-plate, so that it can be readilyadjusted to use for fuelfor heating of gas, coke, hard coal, and soft or bituminous coal, or either of them, at pleasure, by merely adjusting the upper front portions of the plate. Another object of myinvention is to provide ready means for cleaning out soot and dust that may lodge on the top of the plate, all of which will be fully set forth in the description of the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a central vertical section of a stove containing niyimprovement in position for use. Fig. 2 is a top perspective View of the deflecting damper-plate. Fig. 3 is an enlarged section on line or at, Fig. 2,sh0wing the deflecting damper-plate in different adjusted positions.
1 represents the fire-basket of an ordinary stove.
2 is the combustion-chamber.
3 is my improved deflecting damper-plate.
i represents the collar for attaching the pipe.
5 represents the throat of the flue, between the deflectingdampenplate and the breast of the stove. This dam per-plate is shown as constructed of three sections A B 0, connected together by hinges 5 and 6.
7 represents a damper-plate in the rear section 0. It is connected thereto by hinged lugs S. This damper-plate afiords easy access to the top of the plate for cleaning off dust and soot that may accumulate there. Another object of this damper-plate is, sometim es when the fire is started-say when soft coal is used and quick combustion is required-the damper-plate may be raised to allow a ready escape of the gases by the increase of draft due to this opening. As soon as the heat is raised suflicient to insure perfect combustion the dam per may be lowered. This deflecting-plate may be lined or covered with fire-clay or any other non-conductin g material desired.
Mode of operation: In Fig. 1 the deflecting damper-plate is in position, say, for using natural gas or coke when the draft is good. \Vh en more draft is requiredsay when hard coal is usedthe sectionAis turned back. hen still more draft is required, sections A B can be turned back. Thus it will be seen there is a large range of draft adjustment in this deflecting damper-plate which adapts the stove to be heated with any one of the various fuels now in common use.
I have shown this combined damper and deflecting-plate as used in connection with a portable open stove; but it is obvious that it can be used in any fire place or grate equally as well.
Having described my invention, what I claim isl. Acombiiied damper and deflecting-plate adapted to be used with open stoves or fireplaces, consisting of two or more sect-ions hinged together and supported at the rear and projecting forward over and above the fire, substantially as herein specified.
2. The combined deflecting damper-plate composed of three or more sections hinged to gether and supported over the fire behind the upper front plate, substantially as herein described.
A combined damper and deflecting-plate composed substantially of two or more sections hinged together, the rear section 0 being provided with an-independent damper 7, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
STANHOPE BOAL.
