Description

L. M. E. RAVEAUD & V. MARTY; Hating-Stove.
N0. i68,922. Patented0ct.19 ,1875.
NITED STATES \PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS M. E. RAVEAUD AND VINCENT MARTY, OF ORLEANS, LA.
IMPROVEMENT-IN HEATlNG-STOVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 168,922, dated October 19, 1875; application filed February 9, 11575.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, LOUIS M. E. RAVEAUD and VINCENT MARTY, residents of the city of New Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Heating-Stoves; and we do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and
. correct description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making a part of this specification.
The nature of our invention consists in arranging within a suitable casing a fire-clay back, the cavity in the front of which is of a semi-oval form, and in so relatively securing .said back in connection with the front of the casing as to leave a narrow vent or passage, say of about an inch in width, between the back and the front of the casing.
The advantages of this combination are, first, owing to the fact that the cavity contracts at its lower section, a very small grate is required, and, consequently, but little fuel is needed to tilt the same, while the passage left between the back and the front of the casing provides for a free circulation of air within the casing, thereby keeping the latter cool, and thus avoiding the generation of carbonic-acid gas, which is both disagreeable and unhealthy; and, besides, this space. or passage affords a means through which an increased supply of theoxygen of the air is fed or supplied to the fuel, and which greatly aids in securing the thorough combustion of the fuel, and, of course, insures that a greater amount of heat shall be emitted.
Our invention will be more readily understood by referring to the drawing, in which Figure 1 is a front view of our invention, and Fig.2 a vertical section of the same.-
A represents the outer casing of the stove; B, the cover, and G the bottom, of the same. D D are a pair of andirons placed within the stove for the support of the grate-bottom a, upon which rests the lire-clay back E, above described, there being a space of about one inch between it and the front of the stove, in order that the heated air may circulate freely around it. The front of the stove is provided with an opening, F, corresponding in form and size to that of the outline of the fire-clay back, in order that the heat from the stove may be emitted through the same. G is the front of the grate, which is secured to the lower part of the opening F, in the usual manner. H is the draft-opening, within which is placed the ash-damper b, operated through the handle 0, and by means of which the light ashes are drawn off with the current of air to the rear of the fire-back E, a portion of the said ashes being carried by the draft up through the chimney, the balance settling in the rear of the said back, from whence it can be withdrawn throughv an ash door, which may be constructed in the rear of the stove, at any point found most convenient. I is a smoke-pipe, which passes through an orifice in the rear of the stove, the inner end of the said pipe resting in a hollow groove constructed in the upper portion of the fire-back, as shown at c. K is an ash-pan of ordinary construction for catching the cinders and ashes as they fall from the grate above.
With our improved heating-stove, We are enabled to use as fuel either wopd, coal, or coke. It effectually prevents the gas, smoke, and floating ashes from finding their way out of the grate, and hence produces no smell or dust.
Having now described the construction and operation of our invention, to which We have given the name of The Solar Stove, we beg to state that we disclaim all other heatingstoves now in use.
What we claim as new, and by Letters Patent, is
In a fire-place stove, the combination of the oasin g A, fire-clay back E, and a narrow open passage, F, between the back and the front casing, and extending down to the horizontal line of the grate, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
