UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE WASHINGTON LINDSAY, OF GAINESVILLE, TEXAS.
COMBINED TORCH AND GAS-BURNER KEY.
srncrrrcnrxo'n forming part of Letters Patent No. 412,765, dated October 15, 1889.
Application filed November 21, 188%. Serial No. 291,430. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, GEoReE WASHINGTON LINDSAY, of Gainesville, in the county of Cook and State of Texas, have invented anew and Improved Combined Torch and Gas-Burner Key, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a device for lighting gas-burners and operating the cock of the gas-burner, and has for its object to provide a combined torch and key by means of which the gas may be lighted without the flame of the torch coming in contact with the globe surrounding the burner and the cock of the gas-burner readily taken hold of and operated.
The invention consists in a combined gastorch and key constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention, partly broken away. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the upper end thereof, and Fig. 3 represents a modified form of key.
This invention has especial reference to burnershavin g laterally-proj ectin g cocks, and in connection therewith to avoid blackening the globe of the burner.
In the construction of this invention the torch is formed with the main portion 1,having a chamber 2 to contain alcohol, preferably integral therewith, a wick-tube 3, projecting at one side of the forked end 4, with cap 5, and theopening 6, with screw cap 7. The main portion 1 is provided with a handle 8, which is preferably connected thereto by means of a square projection 9 on the main portion 1, located in a correspondin gly-shaped recess 10 in the handle and held by a setscrew 11. The handle 8 may be integral with main portion 1, if desired.
Instead of a rigid key, the torch is provided witha movable key, consisting of an arm 12, pivoted in the forked end 4 by means of a thumb-screw 13. The arm 12 is held in the forked end at by friction, resulting from tightening screw 13 sufficiently to permit it to remain at any angle to the torch to which it may be moved. The enlarged end 14 of the arm 12 is formed with cross-slots 15 of a size to engage a gas-burner cook or other cocks of any size. The arm 12 being adjusted to the desired position with reference to the torch and the slotted end thereof engaged with a gas-burner cook, the flame of the torch will be located at a safe distance from the globe inclosin g the burner.
In the modified form of key in Fig. 3 the arm 16 is formed with an arm 17, projecting at right angles thereto and having its end provided with intersecting slots 18.
By means of this invention a combined torch and gas-burner key is provided which may be usedwith Lungren and other burners, or any apparatus having a cock at the side, without interfering with the globe, and by means of which gas-burner cocks may readily be reached.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A combined torch and gas-b urner key consisting of a handle having near its upper end a reservoir, from which projects a wick-tube in close proximity to the extreme upper end of the handle, and an arm adj ustably pivoted to the upper end of the handle above the reservoir and provided with slots for engaging a gas-burner cock, substantially as described.
2. In a combined torch and gas-burner key, the combination, with a body portion having a forked upper end and provided with a res-
