FIG I.
-FIC5 Q %rne% L AM QQK QQ ALDERSHQT, ENGLAND- .A'rmbsiffi i Application filed August 8,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it knowiithat I, W'ittrair IIQQKER, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at el er iotfi nt Englan h invented certain" new and "useful Improvements in or Connected with Atmospheric Gas-Burners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to gas regulating devices for use with Bunsen burners the said regulating devices being of a kind in which the gas passes through one or more orifices forming part of the gas nozzles.
Now the object of my invention is to construct such appliances whereby I can obtain a proper mixture of gas without interfering with the supply of air to mix with the gas. For the purpose of my invention I construct three or more gas holes in the nipple in line and of varying sizes, commencing at one end and increasing in diameter, or it may be a slot of the same or varying width and inside this nipple I position a screw rod or rectilinearly slidingvalve of round, square or other shape which can be moved along from the outside to close or open one or more of the holes or uncover the slot to a greater or lesser degree the closing commencing at the end having the largest hole, the air openings being permanent.
My invention will be clearlyunderstood from the following description aided by the annexed drawings which illustrates a gas nipple on an enlarged scale-and in which Figure 1 is a section of a gas nipple having three holes of varying diameters.
Fig. 2 is a section through the line a a of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a similar view to Fig. 1 but with the screw rod and its connection of slightly modified construction.
Fig. 4 is an elevation of an upright burner with the devices shown in Fig. 3 applied.
Fig. 5 is an elevation of an inverted burner with the device shown at Fig. 1 applied.
Fig. 6 is a plan of the nipple.
In simple form and as at Fig. 1 my valve consists of a round rod A having one end reduced in diameter and screw threaded as at B for engaging a screw threaded hole in the nipple casing C, the other end projecting through a hole in the nipple casing G and carrying a turn button or handle D. The rod A is of such diameter that it will cover all the holes E, F, G in the nipple C Specification of Letters lPatent.

alin'ob or jumped up end to prevent the rod from being removed from the nipple.
Instead of screwing the end of the rod into a hole in the casing it may be screwed into a hole in a thimble I screwed in the nipple C and in this case the rod is reversed and the button D fixed on the screw end B the inside diameter of the thimble I being large enough to receive the larger diameter of the rod A, as shown by Fig. 3. I prefer that a circular groove be made at the base of the holes E, F, G for the better contact of the rod A.
By this construction, one style of burner can be made to suit varying qualities of gas,
and the valve be then adjusted to suit the quality of the gas for a particular district and in all cases the ordinary gas cook can be turned full on without it being necessary to adjust same, and further the air holes J are fixed and not adjustable as to size as at present, the only regulation required being by the rod A.
The holes or slot may be parallel or tapered. I have shown my invention as applied to an illuminating burner but it can equally be applied for gas fires, cooking stoves and other gas heating contrivances.
What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a gas burner of the class specified, a nipple having a plurality of longitudinally alined outlet holes therethrough decreasing in diameter from the first to the last hole of the series, and a rotary longitudinally slidable valve of enlarged smooth form seated to closely move against and control the base portions of all the holes of the series to successively close or open said holes, the slidable valve being provided with a reduced threaded feed means.
2. In a gas burner of the class specified, a nipple having a plurality of outlet holes arranged in longitudinal alinement and decreasing in diameter from the first to the last of the series of holes, and a rotary longitudinally slidable valve of enlarged smooth form closely engaging the lower portions of and controlling all of the holes of the burner to successively close and open said holes, the valve being operatively supported by the nipple and having a reduced screw-threaded from the first largest to the last of the series of said holes, and a rotary longitudinally slidable valve of enlarged smooth form closely engaging the lower portions of and controlling all of the holes of the series to successively'closeand open said holes, the valve being operative through one part of the nipple and having a reduced screW- threaded stem engaging an opposite part of the nipple, the lva'lv'e being operative by 15 means exterior of the nipple.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM HOOKER.
