UNITED STATES EEICE.
PATENT IMPROVEMENT IN ELASTIC FUR BANDS.
' Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 4 l, R45, dated January 5, 1864.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN W. GAY, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use a certain new and useful Elastic Fur Band and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the said invention.
' A band of fur fitted so as to be elastic is an article much needed in different articles of clothing. An elastic fur wristlet under the coat-sleeve would be approved, and an elastic fur band that can be placed around a hat or cap or removed at pleasure would be worn as adapted to very cold seasons. Beside an elastic fur band can beintroduced in muffs, cuffs, and similar articles. Heretofo re an india rubber cord has been sewed to the edge of a piece of fur or to the lining of the same in cuffs and muffs.
The nature of my said invention consists of a new article of manufacture composed of a strip of elastic woven shirred goods attached, while under more or less tension, to a strip of fur and the ends united to form a band, where by the fur is drawn together by the contraction of the band and can be stretched until the limit of, the length of the skin or fur is attained.
I take a piece of elastic shirred goods and stretch the same whatever amount is desired and attach the fur to the same by se'wing.
In Figure 1 I have shown a section of the shirred goods to and fur b united by sewing at c. When this is turned inside out,the fur surrounds the edges and the sewing is inside the band, as shown in the section, Fig. 2. Fig. 3 is a plan of the skin before turning, and Fig. 4 is a portion of a fur band ready for use.
It will be understood that where the elastic shirred goods are stretched considerably before sewing the fur will be looser or drawn into wrinkles upon the contraction of this elastic fabric; but when only a slight tension is applied to the fabric before sewing on the fur the contraction will only be sufficient to cause the band to bind around a cap or other article almost as large as the band when fully stretched.
It will be understood that the ends of such elastic strips when united make such strips into the form of a band.
WVhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
An elastic fur band, composed of a strip of woven shirred goods attached to the strip of fur, as and for the purposes specified.
In witness whereof I have'hereunto set my signature this 3d day of December, 1863.
JOHN \V. GAY.
