A. J. BIGBLOW 8v H. D. NOR'THRUP BARREL HOOP.l
No. 419,492. Patented Jan. 14,1890,
WJIJVESES www UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALLEN J. BIGELOIV AND HIRAM D. NORTHRUP, OF OGDENSBURG, NEW YORK;
CLARA A. BIGELOW ADMINISTRATRIX OF SAID ALLEN J. BIGELOW, DE-
cEAsEn.
BARREL-HOOP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 419,492, dated January 14, 1890. Y Application filed November 8, 1889. Serial No. 329,613. (No model.) y
' To all whom it may concern.:
Be it known that we, ALLEN J. BIGELOW and HIRAM D. NoR'rHEUP, citizens of the United States, residing at Ogdensburg, in the county of St. Lawrence and State of New York,
have invented certain new and useful Imtaken on the line oc o: of Fig. 2, and is designedA to more fully show the staples cl employed to fasten the ends of the encircling-band.
This invention has particular reference to that class of wooden barrel-hoops provided with an encircling tie-wire or binder to hold the hoop securely in place upon the barrel and render it much stronger and durable than the ordinary all-wood hoops.
The object of the present inventionis to overcome the existing objections to this class of hoops and produce a hoop of extremely simple construction which may be readily applied to a barrel and secured in place, and which, when -so secured, will be very strong and durable, as will more fully hereinafter appear.
In the annexed drawings, a designates an ordinary Wooden barrel-hoop constructed of a strip of Wood bent into acircular shape and secured by lapping its ends. Out out of the outer face of this hoop, midway between its edges, is an annular groove which is rectangular in crosssection and of suitable depth and width. This groove may be cut out of the hoop in any suitable man nerfor in stance,
formed. In this rectangulargroove is placed an encircling-band, of metal b, which snugly tits the groove and preferably comes flush with its outer face, as shown. This band is wider than it is thick, in order that it may not cut into the hoop when any internal strain is applied to the barrel. The ends of this band are connected together without screws or rivets by simply being passed through a flat connecting loop or ring c and then turned or bent back under themselves, said ends being suitably fastened by means of staples d, driven into the hoop. Other staples d may be used to hold the band in its groove, as shown.
In securing the binder in place around the hoop the two are first formed separately. Then the wooden hoop is compressed or reduced in p diameter sufficiently to permit the encirclingband to slip over and embrace it, after which the wooden hoop is expanded suiiiciently to force the encircling-band into its groove,when it is securely fastened by staples.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim is*- A barrel-hoop consisting of a wooden hoop a, having formed in its surface an annular at groove, a flat metallic encircling band embedded in the said groove, .a at connecting ring or loop c, the ends of the said encircling-band being passed through the said ring or loop and bent or turned back under themselves, as shown, and staples d d, driven into the hoop and embracing the ends of the band, as and for the purposes described.
In testimouywhereof We affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
