PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK BOMMARIUS, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
BALE-Tl E SPLICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 295,340, dated March 18, 1884.
Application Sled January 10, 1884. (No model.)
Lib all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDERICK BoMMAniUs, of N ew Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bale-Tie Splices, of which the following isa full, clear, and exact description.
The object of this invention is to produce a simple, firm, durable, and economical bandsplicing tie applicable to the baling of cotton or other materials, and has reference to metallic bands such as are now used in baling cotton.
In baling cotton the reduction which takes place in the sizes oi' the bales by the act of compression and drawing the ends ofthe bands, so as to tighten and secure them by the usual buckles or other fastenings, leaves a surplus in the lengths of the bands, which surplus is ordinarily wasted as scrap. This waste amounts to many feet ot' band in a few bales,- and my invention consists in utilizing these scraps or short lengths of band by` splicing or uniting them, substantially as hereinafter described, and`whereby all Waste is avoided andthelapping ends of the band sections or lengths are easily and firmly united with one another, and are not liable to become loosened or detached by jarring, as when the splicing is secured by rivets.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts iu all the gures.
Figure l represents a view in perspective of the lapping end portions of two band sections or lengths spliced and secured in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of thef same, and Fig. 3 a transverse section thereof` on the line rcx in Fig. 2. Fig.
4 is a longitudinal sectional view through the completed bale-tie.
A A are the lapping end portions of two sections or lengths of a tie-band, composed of a series o f such sections as formed from the Waste or surplus ot' ordinary baling-bands and similarly spliced or united to make up a complete band. These lapping ends are stamped or cut and bent to produce or form in their faces slit loops b b, which t into or engage with one another, and are secured when so engaged by a separate transverse key, c, passed through or Withinvthe inner loop, and which key may be the blank stamped out of the buckle used in A are also secured (and this may be done at the same time as forming the slit loops) by locking-lips d d, produced by indenting and cutany desired distance from the slit loops b b.
rlhere may be any number of these lockinglips, as also any number of the slit loops, in each spliced portion of the band-sections, and the two means of fastening combined serve to secure a most effective resistance, that insures a solid and durable connection, and that Will prevent any dismemberment of the sectionally-constructed band when exposed to strain. I am aware that a bale-band has been formed through their overlapping ends, and a key passing through said loops, is not new; also, that it is not new to provide a bale-band made of a vsingle piece of material with punched interlocking longitudinal and transverse slots and indentation at their overlapping ends, but without a key.
Having thus described myinvcntion, l claim as nenr and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A bale-band formed of pieces of scraper Waste material A A", united at their adjacent ends by the longitudinal slit loops b b, transverse lockinglips d d, and a key, c, passing through loops (l d, substantially as set forth.
