BOOT-LASTING MACHINE.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 4,163, dated August 26, 1845.

This machine consists essentially of a two legged standard a a one leg in Fig. l, being broken at a, and removed for the bet ter representation of some of the parts; two clamps or small vises c, c, closed by thumb screws cl, CZ, and opened by springs between the jaws; a slide block Z9, connecting the upper ends of the clamps c, 0, with which it forms a hinge joint at b, and sliding vertically between the two legs of the standard a, a; a thumb screw f f passing down thro-ugh the head of the standard a, a and screwing into the nut cut in the slide block b, for raising and lowering the clamps c, c, the screw being prevented from sliding up o-r down in the standard by a shoulder above, and a piece or collar g below; a transverse screw with a thumb nut L, it, for forcing inward the clamps c, c, and the two springs k le to throw the clamps apart, when not prevented by the screw, and nut h, h,

The operation of this machine is as follows. The inner sole being fixed to the last in the usual way, and the upper leather placed over the last, and secured to the heel and toe, the bottom or foot part of the standard a, a, is made to rest on the inner sole over the hollow of the inverted last as seen in Fig. l, The clamps 0, c, are then let down by means o-f the screw f f upon the outside of the last, until they may be made fast, to the edges of the upper leather, which done, they are drawn upward producing what is called the instep draft, until the leather is drawn tight over the instep of the last. Thenby means of the transverse screw and nut 71 it, the clamps c, c, are forced inward, drawing the leather over the inner sole to the desired degree of tightness. This is called the shank" draft. The leather may then be smoothed down upon the last and tacked at leisure.

If desirable the machine may be placed in different posit-ions upon the last, and the leather in any part, drawn as tight as desired.

Vhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The apparatus for the lasting boots by the compound instep and shank draft, as herein above substantially described and set forth by means of the above described machine, or any other essentially the same.
