To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, GEORGE S. DALBY, of North Scituate, in the countyof Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented cer- 5 tain new and useful Improvements in Burnishing-Jacks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exactdescription.

This invention relates to improvements in burnishing-jacks, and has for its object to provide a novel and efficient standard, which carries a two-part last, and novel devices for opcrating one part of thestandard to separate or bring the two parts i of the lasttogether. These objects I accomplish by the construction of devices hereinafter described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings,

In the drawings, A represents a boot or shoe last, made in two parts, B and C, constituting, respectively, a heel andsole support for a boot or shoe. The two-part last A is supported on a vertically-divided or two-part standard, D and E, and to the upper end of 'one part, D, the heel-support B of the last is secured, and to the upper end of the other part, E, the sole-support Ois secured. Each last part B and G has a dovetail tenon, a, fitting a similar dovetail groove, 12, in the upper end of its respective carrying part of the stand-' ard D E. (See Fig. 5.) The sole-carrying part E of the standard is rigidly fixed in position, and the heel-carrying part D is hinged at its lower end, f, so that it can be opened from and closed against the other part, E, the opening of thepart D increasing and the closing of the same shortening the length of the last fromheel to toe. 5 g is the pintle of the hinge connecting the two parts of the stand, and this pintle g has a lever-handle, F, arranged to engage with a stationary ratchet-bar,G, and thus to fasten the part D of the two-part stand in its ad- 50 justed position relative to the otherpart, E.

' 'H Harecoiled springs, one surrounding each of the projecting portions of the rods h, and confined between a head, m, of the rods and the ear-pieces Z, all so as to be compressed inthe opening of the moving part from the stationary part, and thus by their reaction automatically close the working part against or toward the stationary part when the part D is set free to such action of the springs.

The length of the two parts of the last is to be such as to require them to be opened apart and theirwidth preferably is to be about equal to the width of the inner sole of a boot or shoe of the largest size to be used on the last.

As there is less variation in the width of heels than in the width of the soles in different sizes of boots and shoes, the heel portion B of the last can be used for several sizes.

Two sizes of lasts A are sufficient to practi cally accommodate all sizes of boots and shoes for the purpose of this invention, and by the dovetail connections with its support can be readily and easily changed for the sizes desired.

The handle-lever F is used for the opening of the moving part D of thetwo-part standard.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1 A last-standard composed of a stationary and moving part, E D, each carrying a part of a two-part last, A, and the one hinged to be opened and closed, in combination with the lever or pawl F, ratchet-bar G, headed rod h and guides Z therefor, and springs H, all substantially as and for the purpose described.

2. A last-standard composed of a stationary and moving part, E D, each carrying a part' of a two-part last, A, and the one hinged to be opened and closed, in combination with a 5 spring or springs, H, a lever or pawl, and ratchet-bar G, substantially as and for the purpose described.
