PACKING-CASE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 406,145, dated July 2, 1889.

Be it known that I, HENRY ANTONIO MOOS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seguin,in the county of Guadalupe and State of Texas, have invented anew -and usefulImprovement in Cases or Cabinets. of which th following is a specification.

This invention relates to cases or cabinets for packing andtransporting articles that are brittle and easily breakable, such as eggs, glassware, china, andl the like; and it has for its object to provide a device or case containing a series of sub-compartments or boxes, each of which is provided with cells to receive and hold the individual articles to be packed, thus affording great security in transportation and convenience in handling and in eX- posing the articles for sale.

The invention consists in the improved construction and combination of parts,which will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.

In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved packing-case with 011e end open. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view. Fig. 4 is a detail view of one of the cell-cases removed from the packingcase.

The same letters refer to the same parts in all the figures.

A designates the outer or packing case, which is preferably rectangular in shape, and provided with removable ends B B, the body of the case comprising the sides C C, top D, and bottom E, all of which are permanently connected. The bottom E is provided near its ends with transverse grooves F F, and the ends of the top D are rabbeted, as shown at G G. The ends B of the case are shouldered at their lower edges, as shown at II, to adapt their lower edges to enter the grooves F in the bottom of the case. The sides of the end pieces B are adapted to be fitted between the sides of the case and the upper edges of said ends to enter the rabbets G in the top of the case. It will t-hus be seen that when the ends B are adjusted in position they are entirely iiush with the ends of the body of the case. When in position, the said ends may be secured by means of spring-catches I, attached to the top D, and in order to render them easily removable the outer sides are provided with recesses J to enable them to be conveniently grasped.

The body 'of the case A is provided with a series of longitudinal shelves or partitions K K, of which there vmay be any desirednumber, and which serve to subdivide` the said casing into compartments for the reception of the cell-cases L L. The latter consist of boxes, which may be constructed of pasteboard or other suitable material, and which are provided with removable covers M. Each of the said cases is divided by means of partition-strips N, which maybe of any suitable construction, into any desired number of cells, preferably a certain definite number-such as one, tWo, or three dozenmso that the content-s of each cell-case shall be known.

The operation and advantages of my invention willbe readily understood from the'foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed. The articles which are packed in the cell-cases are safely protected from breakage, and theindividual cell-cases, being separated by the horizontal partitions in the packing-case, are never liable to be crushed or jammed, to the injury of their contents. The individual cell-cases are easily accessible by removing either end of the packing-case, and are convenient for eX- posing the contents for sale in an attractive manner. The said cell-cases also forni convenient packages, which may be sold or disposed of with their contents, and wliicli,when emptied by the consumer, may be returned to the dealer and used over again..

I would have it understood that I do not wish to limit myself to any particular construction of the individual cell-cases or of the cells therein. The said cells may be constructed of longitudinal and transverse vertical'strips of paper or pasteboard intersecting each other and suitably connected, or of a single vertical strip suitably folded; or they may be formed by a horizontal partition having openings to receive theindividual articles that are to be packed. I would also have it understood that the horizontal partitions in IOO the paeking-ease may be dispensed with when desired, inasmuch as they are not always neeessary to support the cell-eases.
