Be it known that I, ANDREW H. ROIKJER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boise, in the county of Ada and State of daho, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in boxes of paper card board or the like of relatively small size, particularly adapted to receive small articles of food, 0r the like, such as candy, fancy cakes, biscuits'etc.

One of the objects of the present invention isl to provide a simple and practical box of the above general character adapted to keep the articles in separated position.

A further object is to provide a box of the above mentioned character preferably constructed from a single piece of paper or card board, and in which the articles of food may be packed and securely held in a sanitary manner.

A further object is to provide a box of the last above character with means for successively delivering or unpacking the articles contained therein.

A further object is to provide a box of the first above mentioned character which may be conveniently connected with another box of similar shape and style to provide packages of a known weight or any convenient multiple thereof. l

Other objects will be in part obvious from the annexed drawings and in part indicated in connection therewith by the following analysis of this invention.

This invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combination of parts and in the unique relations of the members and in the relative proportoning and disposition thereof, all as more completely outlined herein.

To enable others skilled in the art so fully to comprehend the underlyin features thereof that they may embody te same by the numerous modifications in structure and relation contemplated by this invention, drawings depicting a preferred form have been annexed as a part of this disclosure, and in such drawings, like characters of reference denote corresponding parts throughout all the views, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of acomplete box of two connected sections; Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the box i1lustrated in Fig. 1 in open position and the manner in which the articles packed therein are successively discharged or delivered; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the blank from which each section is made; Fig. 4C is a longitudinal sectional view showing the manner of removing the contents; Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on the same line with a slightly modified form of deliver feature.

Referring now to the rawings in detail,

the sides 11, 12 and 13 respectively. This top portion is divided into squares, in the present case eight in number, and the surface of the card board cut along the full lines to form flaps 2O and 21 in each square, which are bent downwardly into parallel position, as shown more clearly in Fig. 2, thus dividing the box longitudinally into two channels of four squares each, which are subsequently divided into individual squares by the delivery mechanism shown in Fig. A and hereinafter more fully described.

@ver the top member 15 is placed a second top member 22 provided with one downwardly turned end 23 which co-acts in an interlitting manner as desired with the ends 11 and 16. Along one of the longitudinal sides are a plurality of tongues 24, in the present case three in number. These tongues are provided with interlocking ends 25 made in three sections, the side sections adapted to be folded over the central section, and be inserted through slots 26 adjacent the bottom 8 on the opposite side. After being passed through these slots the natural resillency of the paper or card board will tend to cause them to expand so that the outside flaps will prevent a removal of these ton ues. `When two box sections are adapted to e connected the tongues 24 of one box section alternate with those of the other box section. Thus as shown in Fig. 1 the tongues numbered 24 at the extreme left are a part of the box 7, While those numbered 24 are part of the box section 6. These tongues when arranged in this manner form a hinge device which Will permit the boxes to be folded and unfolded in a free and easy manner.

Referring now more particularly to Fig. 4 of the drawings, the candy, cakes or the like are separated one from another by means of a strip of ribbon 25', which passes over the transverse members of the cover or top and under the transverse members of the top 22 and is then looped back upon itself, as indicated at 26, where it is gripped between the same members 15 and 22 and passes under the second object. the free end 27 is grasped and pulled toward the right it will tend to raise the object carried thereby, as indicated in Fig. 4, thus permitting easy removal thereof. A further pull of the strip will release the looped end 26 and expose to view the next adjacent object and discharge the same in the same nianner. From this it will be seen that each article is packed in a separate cell out of contact with the adjacent objects andy also protected at the top, thus preventing dust and dirt from falling thereon. 1f desired this strip 25 may be made of paper, ribbon or a transparent material, such as a Celluloid composition.

In Fig. 5 there is shown a slight modification in which the ribbon 25 instead of being looped back upon itself merely passes over the transverse members l5 and under the members 22 and separate squares of transparent material 28 are placed over the article contained therein to expose the same to view yet at the same time thoroughly protect it. The ribbon or strip 25 on being pulled will force the object upwardly and automatically displace the transparent cov-v ering.

From the above it will be clear that the present device provides a simple and practical box which will be cheap to manufacture yet be reliable and efficient in use and operation. The attractive sanitary and artistic appearance of the box makes itparticularly applicable for packing candy, cakes and other articles of food, although it is of course to be understood that I do not wish to limit myself to any particular application or material from which the box is made, and in the claims the term paper is to be given a broad interpretation to include card board or other suitable material for making boxes of this general character.

WVithout further analysis, the foregoing will so fully reveal the gist of this invention that others can by applying current knowledge readily adapt it for various applications Without omitting certain features that,

Thus as from the standpoint of the prior art, fairly constitute essential characteristics of the generic or specific aspects of this invention, and therefore' such adaptations should and are intended to be comprehended within the meaning and range of equivalency of the following claims. Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1..A blank for a paper box unit, comprising a bottom section and two top sections adapted to be folded one above the other and side flaps integrally formed with one of said first mentioned sections and means integrally connected with and form-y ing a partof the blank for connecting a box unit to a similar box unit.

2. A blank for a paper box comprising a bottom section and two top sections adapted to be folded one above the other, side flaps integrally formed with one of said first mentioned sections, said top section being provided with a plurality of openings and theintermediate section being provided with registering openings and flaps adapted to divide the interior of the box into compartments and means for covering said openings. box of the character described comprising a bottom section and top and intermediate sections having intervening side sections adapted to be folded one over the other, the top section being provided with openings to expose the interior of the boX, and a plurality of tongues along one of the .edges of the top section adapted to Acoact with slots in the bottom of the box adjacent the bottom section.

A box of the character described comprising a bottom section and top and intermediate sections having l' intervening side sections adapted to be folded one over the other, the top section being provided with openings to expose the interior of the box, a plurality of tongues along one of the edges of the top section adapted to coact with slots in the bottom ot the box adjacent the bottom section, the intermediate section being provided with openings and depending flaps dividing the interior of the box longitudinally into compartments.

5. A box of the character described comprising a botto-m, top and intermediate section having intervening side sections adapted to be folded one over the top, the top section being provided with openings to expose the interior of the box, a plurality of tongues along one of the edges of the top section adapted to coact with slots in the bottom of the box adjacent the bottom section, the intermediate section bein provided with openings and depending aps dividing the interior of the box longitudinally into compartments, and means interwoven with the openings in the top and intermediate secmemes tions dividing the longitudinal compartments into an individual series ot' cells.

A box of the character described comprising a bottom, topand intermediate section having intervening sidesections adapted to be folded one over the top, the top sec tion being provided with openings to expose the interior of the box, a plurality of tongues along one of the edges of the top section adapted to coact with slots in the bottom of the box adjacent the bottom section, the intermediate section being provided with openings and depending iiaps dividing. the interior of the box longitudi' nally into compartments, and means interwoven with the openings in the top and intermediate sections dividing the longitudinal compartments into an individual series of cells, said last mentioned means being provided with a free end adapted to be pulled to discharge the contents of the cells successively.

7. A box of the character described comprising a bottom, top and intermediate section having intervening side sections adapted to be folded one over the top, the top section being provided with openings to expose the interior of the box, a plurality of tongues along one of the edges of the top section adapted to coact with slots in the bottom of the box adjacent the bottom section, the intermediate section being provided with openings and depending flaps dividing the interior of the box longitudinally into compartments, and means interwoven with the openings in the top and intermediate sections dividing the longitudinal co-mpartments into an individual series of cells, said last mentioned means being provided with a free end adapted to be pulled to discharge the contents of the cells successively and a transparent cover for each individual cell.

8. A box of the character described having grill top and a strip associated With the transverse portion of the grill top and extending under the articles contained in the box, said strip being provided with a free end adapted to be pulled to successively discharge'the contents of said cells.

9. A box of the character described having a grill top and a strip associated with the transverse portion of the grill top and extending under the articles contained in the box, said strip being provided with a free end adapted to be pulled to successively discharge the contents of said cells, and a transparent cover for each of said cells.

A box of the character described having a grill top and a, strip associated with the transverse portion of the grill top and extending under the articles contained in the box, said strip being provided with a free end adapted to be pulled to successively discharge the contents of said cells, and a cover for each of said cells formed by a bent back flap of said strip.

11. A blank for a paper box comprising a box section provided with a bottom, intermediate and top sections adapted to be folded one over the other, said top section being provided with tongues along its free edge adapted to engage openings adjacent the bottom section of the same box or open ings in the adjacent bottom section of a similar box whereby the boxes may be combined in series in any desired number.

A box or' the character described comprising a plurality of sections, each section having a bottom and top member connected with intermediate sides, the end flaps cut from a single piece of paper, the top being provided with a plurality of openings and discharging means associated with the transverse portion of the top forming said openings and the articles contained in the box, and adapted to divide the interior of the box into cells and successively discharge the contents of each cell.

13. A box of the character described comprising a plurality of sections, each section aving a bottom and top member connected with intermediate sides, and end iiaps cut from a single piece of paper, the top being provided with a plurality of openings, and discharging means associated with the transverse portion of the top forming said openings and the articles contained in the box, and adapted to divide the interior of the box into cells and successively discharge the contents of the cells, each section being provided with a plurality of tongues, the tongues of one of the sections being adapted to co-act with openings in an adjacent section.
