Description
(ModeL) J. M. OKELLY. CIGARETTE BOX FOR AUTOMATIGVENDING APPARATUS.
Patented May 28. 1889.
ATTORNEY- N. PEYERS, Pholo-Lflhcgnpher, Washinghan. nc.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES M. OKELLY, OF NEIV YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR, BY DIRECT AND MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO THE AUTOMATIC VENDING BOX COMPANY, OF NEIV YORK.
CIGARETTE-BOX FOR AUTOMATIC VENDING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.404,299, dated May 28, 1889.
Application filed November 14,1888. Serial No. 290,846. (Model) To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES M. OKELLY, of the city of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigarette-Boxes for Automatic Vending Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvedcigarette-box to be used with automatic sellro ing machines in which cigars or cigarettes are sold, said box having the advantage that it can be inserted with the cigars or cigarettes into the vending apparatusby destroying the revenuestamp thereon, and exhibiting the is torn portion of the revenue-stamp remaining on the box through the glass front of the vending apparatus so as not to come in conflict with the present internal-revenue laws thereby; and the invention consists of a cigar or cigarette box for automatic vending apparatus, the body of said box being open at one end and provided at one side with a raised shoulder or projection, and of a lid provided with an extension at the end that closes the end opening of the body, as will appear more fully hereinafter, and finally. be pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure '1 represents a perspective view of my improved o cigar or cigarette box for automatic vending apparatus, and Figs. 2 and 3 are respectively perspective views of the lid and body of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre- 5 sponding parts.
In the drawings, A represents the body, an d B the lid, of my improved cigar or cigarette box, which is used in connection with an automatic vending apparatus. The body A is 0 open at one end, and the lid B is provided at the corresponding end with an extension-flap, b, that closes the open end of the body A when the lid is placed on the box, but permits the convenient opening of the box by 5 tearing or breaking the stamp when the box is placed in the vending apparatus, and then removing the lid. The cigars or cigarettes can then be discharged through the open end of the box, while the stamp, which is placed around the lid and body of the box, is broken, but is always in view through the glass frame of the vending apparatus, so that the cigars or cigarettes can be delivered and sold from the automatic vending apparatus without coming in conflict with the internal-revenue 5 5 laws, which so far prevent the sale of cigars or cigarettes by such apparatus.
For the purpose of supporting the box in the apparatus, the body A is provided at one side with a transverse shoulder, d, formed of a layer of pasteboard, which rests on a suitable keeper in the box, so as to be retained in proper position for discharging the cigars or cigarettes from the lower open end of the box to the conveying-hopper and deliverychannel. The lid B extends over the shoulder d when in position on the body of the box.
The automatic vending apparatus with which my box is to be used forms the subjectmatter of a separate application for Letters Patent filed on the same date herewith, to which reference is made.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new an d desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A cigar or cigarette box for an automatic vending apparatus, composedot' a body open at the top and at one end, and a detachable lid provided with an extension-flap for closing the open end of the box, substantially as set forth. 8o
2. A cigar or cigarette box for an automatic vending apparatus, consisting of a body having an open end, a transverse shoulder extending at one side of the body, and a lid having an extension-flap closing the open end 8 5 of the box, substantially as set forth.
I11 testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.-
JAMES M. OKELLY.
