\VILLIAM MYERS, OF IIADDONFIELD, NE\V JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO FRED- ERICK E. Sl/VOIE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, AND JAMES V.
L AF FER'IY, OF
FIRE-KINDLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 393.570, dated November 27, 1888.
Application filed April 1558?.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, VVILLIAM It. Mvnns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Haddonlield, in the county of Camden, State of 5 New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fire- Kindlcrs and Fuel- Blocks, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawing.
My invention consists of a flre-kindler and fuel-block formed of a metallic casing contain ing filling or packing which is saturated with hydrocarbon or other suitable inflammable oil, the vapor generated therein escaping at the joints of the casing, whereby it may be consumed.
The figure rcpresci'll's a perspective view of a firekindler and fuel block embodying my invention.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a casing formed of the heads B and a peripheral wall, 0. Vithiu the casing is a filling or packing, 1), of mineral wool, asbestus, or other suitable indestructible material, the same being saturated with hydrocarbon fluid or other suitable oil, which may be readily vaporized when the casing is subjected to heat. The ends of the wall 0 are lapped and connected by rivets a a, near the top and bottom thereof, '30 whereby they are held closely in contact in order to prevent escape of the fluid contents of the casing.
The operation is as follows: The casing is coated with hydrocarbon fluid or oil and the casing placed in the combustion chamber or fire pot of a stove, 20., and the coating ignited.
As the casing becomes heated, the fluid therein is vaporized and escapes at the joints between the heads and body and side of the body, the

vapor igniting and producing a flame which 40 may be utilized for kindling the [ire or continuing combustion. The ends of the body are cut, forming lips E, which are bent down on the heads, thus securing the latter and avoiding rivets or other l'astenings for eonnect- 4,5 ing the heads with the body.
As the ends of the casing are held by the rivets a (1, when the wall is heated by the primary flame of the coating material the ends and ccuterexpand unequally,so that the center portions of the joint open to a considerable extent, thus permitting the vapor generatei'l within the casing to escape and ignite at the said joint. \Vhcn the casing cools after service, thejoint closes and prevents the escape of the fluid contents.
I am aware that it is not new, broadly considcrcd, to construct the casing of a lire-kindler of separate impcrl'orate parts; neither is it new to secure the heads of a perforated ms ing by means of lugs integral with the casing, and I therefore disclaim the same.
' Having thus described myinvention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- A fire-kindler and fuel-block consisting of a cylindrical casing of imperforate sheet metal with overlapping contact edges riveted at or near the ends and having the lips E integral therewith, and imperforate heads secured in place by said lips, and a packing of incombustiblc material, said parts being combined substantially as described.
WILLIAM R. MYERS.
