Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..
HENRY KURTH, OF EAST NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN TOBACCO-SNIOKINo4 Pipes.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 39.819, dated September 8, i863.
To a/ZZ whom it may con/cern,.-
Be it known that I, HENRY KURTH, of East New York, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Smoking-Pipe; and I do hereby declare that thefollowingis afull, clear, and ex` scribe its construction andoperation.
A represents the bowl of a smoking-pipe, madeoil wood or any other suitable material, and provided with a shank, B, to receive the tube C. The shank B is made out of one and the same piece -with the bowl, and a passage, a, extends through it to the inner end of the bowl, to conduct the smoke from said bowl to the tube:
On the side of or under the smoke-passage a is thc cavity b, which extends down through the shank as far as possible without commu* nicating with the interior of the bowl. The mouth of this cavity is made beveling toward the mouth ofthe smoke-passage, so that the moisture running down from the tube C will readily rind its way into the said cavity. The tube C is inserted into a socket, c, in the outer end of the shank B, and said socket is made somewhat deeper than that portion of the tube which tits into it, so that the end of the tube will not touch the shoulder at the bottom of the socket. The opening at the inner end of the tube is countersunk, and when the pipe is held in the mouth or when it is laid downon a table the water which may run down through or be contained in the tube will gravitate toward the cavity b, which is situated below the smoke-passage a, and said smokepassage will always remain dry and clean and allow a free and unobstructed passage for the smoke. No moisture will4 thus be able to reach the tobacco in the bowl, and the tobacco will burn just as well and be equally sweet at the bottom of the bowl as it is on the top.
This invention is appli-cable with equal advantage to pipes of clay and oi' wood; but it is particularly intended for such pipes the bowls of which are made of wood, and by its use the cost of the pipe is not increased and the smoking isV rendered much more agreeable than it is with pipes of the ordinary construction.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent as an improved article of manufacture- A smoking-pipe which has its shank B made with a smoke-passage, ct, -and a moisture-cavity, b, arranged in respect to cach other and to the bowl and stem C, in the inanner herein shown and described.
