NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HORATIO H. ABBE, OF EAST HAMPTON,-CONNECTICUT.
SPOON-REST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 397,885, dated February 19, 1889.
Application filed February 13, 1888. Serial No. 263,847. (No model.)
.\ 0 all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, HORATIU ll. ABBE, of East Hampton, in the county of M iddlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement Applicable to the Purpose of a Spoon-Rest, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure l is a top view of my improvement put to the use of supporting a spoon. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same.
The object and purpose of the improi'ement are the production of a device that may be temporarily attached to the handle of a spoon or any other similar article for the purpose of supporting the spoon or other similar article in a given positiona-s, for instance, in the case of a spoon supporting that spoon with 1 its bowl upward. A spoon thus supported has at times obvious advantages, and a notable instance is for use in a sick-room.
The letter a denotes the handle of a spoon.
The letter 1) denotes what I will call a standard, which, by preference, has a foot, 0. At the top of this standard is formed a rearwardly-arranged rest piece or plate, Z, having on its side edges the lips cl, which project inwardly or toward each other, and are adapted to receive the edges of a spoon.
As already indicated, this rest is applicable to other articles than spoons; but the handles of spoons and forks generally have edges which are oblique to each other, and in the case of applying this improvement to such a handle the lips d are placed in corresponding obliquity to each other.
This device is operative without any other feature or construction than those already described; but practically 1 make the standard of some metal which, though elastic, can be bent, so that by bending it it may readily be made to be used in connection with spoons or other articles which have the handles at different angles as regards the bowl. This capacity of being bent in this way for this purpose I denominate in the claim as flexible.
I claim as my invention- The detachable spoon-rest herein described, consisting of the standard b, having a foot, 0, and formed at its top with the rest-plate Z, having on its side edges the clips d, adapted to receive and hold the handle of the spoon, substantially as specified.
HORATIO H. ABBE.
