Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. 1
JOHN J. TAYLOR, OF ATTIGA, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND E. F.
GILES, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINERY FOR OPERATING CHURNS Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 39,532, dated August 11, 1863,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN J. TAYLOR, of Attica, in the county of Fountain and State ofIndiana, have invented a new and Improved Mode ofAppIying Automatic Power to Churns;
'and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the condensation and compacting of the machinery and power requisite to operate churns automatically within a box lid or cover of the churn, thus making it as convenient and portable as ordinary spring clocks, and applicable to churns and dashers of different sizes, and to the shafts of dashers that rotate vertically or horizontally and by substituting a crank for the coupling at e, the dasher may be worked reciprocally in either vertical or horizontal directions. L
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, 1. will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
Figure 1 gives a view of the interior parts of the churn-lid, as seen from above, when theupper covering of the lid is removed. At Fig. 2 is a side view of the same parts, resting on a section of a churn, the side of the lid being left open to give a view of the interior.
Similar letters refer to similar parts.
At a is represented a spiral spring, which must be made of such power as may be required to operate dashers of the sizes required.
bis a ratchet wheel connected with the mainspring and shaft, to which a pawl and spring will be attached in the usual way. a c are cog-wheels d d, pinions in which the cogwheels work. 6 is a socket connected with the last pinion, in which the shaft of the dasher is inserted and held firm by means of a thumbscrew, thus forming a coupling between the dasher and the power-lid, to be separated and connected at pleasure. f isadasher,which may be made of the size and form required. 9 is a bearing step or box on the center of the churnbottom in which the pivot-end of the dashershaft will revolve. The upper end of the 'mainspring-shaft is made square, as at h, to which a key or crank may be applied for winding up the spring, by which means the lid becomes charged with power to act upon and operate the dasher automatically, until the power thus imparted becomes exhausted, the duration of which will depend on the length of the spring.
What I claim as my invention, and desiret secure by Letters Patent, is-
A portable lid that shall contain within its interior all the machinery and power to operate a churn-dasher automatically, when constructed and operated substantially as described and set forth in the accompanying drawings and specifications.
7 JOHN J. TAYLOR.
