Description
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
CHARLES V. RAMSDELL, v0F BANGOR, MAINE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SKATES AND FASTENINGS.'
To all whom fit may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES V. RAMsDELL, of Bangor, Penobscot county, in the State of Maine, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Rigging Skates aud Fastening them to the Boot or Shoe; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact descrip tion thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in rigging and fastening the skates to the boot or shoe without the use ot' straps and buckles, or any of the ordinary fixings hitherto in use, by means of metallic toe and heel pieces and the rod, screws, plates, and projections hereinafter described.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
I construct my wooden sole and steel` or iron runner of the skate in any of the known forms, and I make and fix thereto my improved rigging and fastening, as follows: I make and iX a convexl metallic toe-piece, moving longitudinally in a stationary plate, in which the toe of the boot or shoe is held fast by the rod D and the reacting screws E E, hereinafter described. This toepiece is marked A in the accompanying drawings. I make. and x thereto a metallic heel-piece, (marked B,) moving in the same manner. I make an inclined screw, (marked 0,) attached to the heel-piece to fasten the skate to the heel of the boot or shoe by pressing the heel downward and forward, and the toe into the toe-piece, thus fastening the toe and heel at the same time. I make a rod (marked D) runnin glon gitudinally through the Wood, with reacting screws at each end, (marked E E,) by means of which the metallic toe and heel pieces can be moved farther apart or brought nearer together, as the size of the boot or shoe mayrequire. I make projections (marked E F) from the toe and heel pieces, passing through the stationary plates and moved by the rod and reacting screws. I make a plate (marked G) on the end of the heel of the skate, by means of which the rod and reacting screws are kept fast in their places. These may be kept fast in like manner at the toe of the skate or in the middle ofthe Wood.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the devices A, B, D, E, F, and G, as arranged, with the wooden sole of the skate, as herein described, and for the pur poses set forth.
CHARLES V. RAMSDELL.
