Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
OLIVIER LAFRENIERE, OF NEW YORK,N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOOTS AND SHOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 41,305, (lated January 19, 1864; antedated January 7, 1864.
To all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, OLivrER LAFRENIERE, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Boots and Shoes; and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact descrip tion of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in whichl Figure l represents a sectional side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is an inverted plan of the same.
Similar letters of reference in both views indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to the means employed for the purpose of fastening wooden heels and wooden soles on boots and shoes.
A represents a boot or shoe of the ordinary shape and construction, the upperbeing made of 4leather or any other suitable material, and provided with an inner sole, B, in the usual manner. C is the heel, which is cut out of a solid piece of wood and fastened to the boot or shoe by means of a metallic plate, D, which is firmly riveted to the inner sole, B. The edge of this plate is turned up to form a flange or a series of lugs, et, with holes b, and tacks or screws inserted into these holes serve to retain the heel. The plate D may either be made to extend beyond the front edge of the heel, as clearly shown iu the drawings, or it may be triade to terminate in line with the I inner edge of the heel, in order to avoid its means.
The wooden sole E is held in place by a lianged plate, b', of metal or other suitable material, which' is secured to the inner sole, B, in any desirable manner.v Firmly fastened to this plate by rivets or other suitable means are the metallic tips H and the protecting lugs I I', and screws or tacks inserted in suitable holes in the said lugs and in the tips fasten the wooden sole to the boot or shoe. The tips H and lugs I I are made of Wroughtiron or other tough and hard material, and they extend up flush with the surface ofthe sole, so as to protect the same from wearing off uneven. If desired, the sole-plate G might be dispensed with and the tips and lugs fastened directly to the inner sole. I prefer, however, to use both the sole-plates and the tips and lugs to give additional stability and firmness to the sole.
The wooden sole is further secured by tapering nails d, which pass through correspondin gl y tapering holes in plugs e, that are driven into the wood, as clearly shown in Fig. l of the drawings. The nails are clinched on the iusidc, and by their tapering form they retain the soles iirmly, no matter how much they may wear off. The plugs e serve also to increase the durability of the wooden sole, and to protect its surface to a certain extent from wear.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A boot or shoe with a flanged heel-plate, D, wooden heel O, flanged sole-plate G, tip H, protectin g-lu gs I I', tapering nails d, plugs e, and wooden sole E, all combined in the 'manner and for the purpose herein shown and described.
2. The employment or use, for the purpose of securing awooden heel to boots and shoes, of the ianged plate D, with tacks or screws passing through holes in the flange and into the circumference of the heel, as specified.
3. The employment or use, for the purpose of fastening and protecting a wooden sole, E, of a tip, H,and lugs I I, secured to the inner sole of the boot or shoe, and provided with holes to admit of inserting tacks or screws into the edge of the wooden sole, as shown and described.
OLIVIER LAFRENIERE.
