UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALRERT SOHNS, 0E oLAY CENTRE, KANsAs,
DOOR-CHECK.
EPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 389,610, dated September 18, 1888.
Application filed May 19. 1888. Serial No. 274.397. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT SoHNs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clay Centre, in the county of Clay and State of Kan-- sas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Door-Checks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in door-checks; and it consists in a certain novel construction and arrangement of devices, fnlly set forth hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved check applied in the operative position to a door. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of two sections of the rack. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the lever.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the door, to which near its lower edge is'pivoted the check-lever B, having the longitudinal slot 0 near its center mounted on the pivotscrew D. A thumb-hold, E, is formed on one end of the lever, and on the other end is the T-head F, having'the vertical slot G therein, provided at its upper and lower ends with the notches H H. The lever, as will be seen, is capable of longitudinal movement in addition to its rotary movement around the pivot, and therefore the pin or screw I, which passes through the slot G and guides the movement of the T-head, may be engaged in certain positions of the lever by the notches H H to hold the head of the lever in either its raised or lowered position.
The semicircular rack K is arranged on the floor around the hinged edge of the door; and it consists of a series of separable sections, L L, provided with notches M M to engage the lower arm of the T-head F, which is arranged to travel over the rack as the door swings. These sections are provided at their ends with the apertured ears N N, which are adapted to overlap, and screws 0 O are passed through the registering apertures and engaged in the floor. The end section adjacent to the wall is provided with the upstanding stud or stop P, which is adapted to engage the lower edge of the door and prevent it from striking the wall.
The operation of the invention is very simple and is as follows: Tolock the door at any desired point, the lever is moved longitudinally to disengage the lower notchin its head from the guide pin or screw, the lower end of the head is engaged in the required notch in the rack, and the lever is again moved longitudinally to engage the upper notch in its head with the said pin or screw. To release the door, the lower arm of the T-head is disengaged from the rack, and the lower notch therein is engaged with the guide pin or screw.
When the door is locked in position, as described, it cannot be opened from the outside, and therefore an outside door may be left slightly ajar (not sufficient] y open to admit a person) with perfect safety.
The improved check is simple, may be made entirely of cast metal, and it is applied to the door without cutting or defacing the latter and without requiring any previous preparation thereof.
It will be understood that the stop P on the extremity of the rack is designed to engage the lower edge of the door and thus protect the wall when the door, is thrown back without lowering the check-lever. The lever is ordinarily employed only when the door'is to be secured at an angle to the wall.
1. In a door-check, the combination, with a rack, of the lever provided with a longitudi-' nal slot, 0, mounted on a suitable pivot, and also provided with a T-head having a slot, G, operating on a suitable guide pin or screw, the said slot G being provided with notches or offsets H, adapted to engage the pin or screw when the lever is moved longitudinally on the pivot, substantially as specified.
2. In a door-check, the combination, with a lever, -B, mounted on the door, of the rack K, provided with notches adapted to be engaged by the said lever, and the stud or stop I? on the rack to engage the lower edge of the door, and thereby protect the wall, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
. ALBERT SOHNS.
