SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 556,765, dated March 24, 1896.

Be it known that I, LEWIS NOE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Oak Tree, county of Middlesex, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the .following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention relates to locks, and especially such as are applied to sliding doors, such as are usually employed on railway-cars, barns, granaries, or similar structures, though., as will be apparent from the following specification, theymay be applied to doors of any kind or class wherever used.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure l is an elevation of the door of acar provided with my improvement; Fig. i), a side view thereof, the supports for the door being shown in section; Fig. 3, a section on the line a: of Fig. l; and Fig. is a plan view of my improved lock, the side' of the car being showin in section.
In the construction shown the door A is mounted in ways B, formed in the frame at the top and bottom thereof, and secured to the side of the door is a plate C, of any desired material, and pivotally connected therewith at D is a downwardly-depending operating-lever E, the lower end of which is curved outwardly from the door, as shown in Fig. 2.
Secured to the plate C is a band or bearing F, through or beneath which the lever E passes, and this hearing F is provided on its upper surface with an outwardly-directed flange F', having a perforation F2 formed therein.
The upper end of the lever E is provided with an angular extension E', with which is pivotally connected an arm G, which is also pivotally connected with a spring-operated locking-lever H by means of a pin or holt J, which passes through a vertical slot K formed in the plate and door, and mounted on the bolt J, between the arm G and lever H, is an arm L, having at its free end an outwardlydirected flange or extension L', provided with a perforation L2, which registers with the perforation F2 in the flange or extension F" when the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 2.
The lever H is pivoted at H and passes beneath a guide or bearing M, and a spring N is secured to the plate C at N', the free end of which bears upon the lever Il between its pivotal connection and the bearing M. The outer or free end of the lever ll is also provided with a downwardly-directed shoulder or head'Hz, and a latch-plate O is secured to the side frame of the door, provided with a supplemental lock consisting of an outwardlyextending plate or projection P, having a notch or recess P', adapted to receive the end of the lever ll and provided with a perforation P2, and pivotally connected with the plate P, below the perforation P2, is an arm R, provided with a corresponding perforation R' and a head or extension R2, adapted to `fit over the lever l-I when the latter rests within the notch or recess P and hold said lever in said position, and when the arin R is in the position shown in Fig. l the perforation R" will register with the perforation P2 in the plate P.
The perforations F2 and L2 in the flanges or projections F' and L and the perforations P2 and R' in the plate l) and arm R are designed to provide means for sealing the lock, as shown in Fig. l, when desired, by passing cords or similar devices S therethrough and sealing the ends thereof, as shown at F.
The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
Thenever it is desired to lock the door, the main parts being in the position shown in Fig. l and the arms L and R being in the position shown in dotted lines in said ligure, it is only necessary to bring the arm L down into the position shown in full lines in said figure and in Fig. 2, when the flange or proj ection L' formed thereon will rest upon the flange or projection E' on the lever guide or bearing F, and it will be impossible to work the lever E and arin G to operate the lever H and release it from the plate P. The arin R may be also raised to the vertical position at this time and sealed therein, as hereinbefore described, and the arm L also may be sealed, if desired.

Vhen it is desired to open the door, the seals are broken and the arms L and R turned into the position-shown in dotted lines in Fig. l, when by taking hold of the lever E and pressing in the direction of the arrow E2 the arm G and the end of the lever H connected therewith will be drawn down and the door slid back upon its bearin gs, as will be readily understood, and, if desired, a handleUmay be also provided to assist in sliding the door, and whenever it is desired to relock the door it can be pressed forward into the position shown in Fig. l and the arm L turned down, as described.
As will be observed, the plate C may be entirely omitted, if desired, and the operative parts of the lock secured directly to the door, and other changes and modiiications may be made without departing from the scope of my invention.
I have shown in Fig. 2 a lever V, 'mounted on the inner side of the door on the pin or bolt D,which extends therethrough, which is pivotally connected with an arm WV, mounted on the pin or bolt J, by which the operatinglever and its pivotally-connected arm are united, which also extends through the door, by which means the door may be opened or closed from the inner side when it is not locked, as will be readily understood, and while these parts are convenient and may be employed, if desired, it is evident thatthey are independent of the construction hereinbefore described, which constitutes the lock and means for operating it, except to the eX- tent and for the purpose set out in this 'paragraph.
Having fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination with a door of a locking-lever pivotally connected therewith, an arm pivotally connected with the inner end of said lever, an operating-lever pivotally connected with the door, and provided at one end with an angular extension which is pivotally connected Vwith one end of the arm, and a latch-plate secured to the frame of the door in connection with which the locking-lever operates, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination with a door of a locking-lever pivotally connected therewith in a horizontal position an arm pivotally connected at one end with the inner end o'f said locking-lever by means of a bolt or pin, a vertically arranged operatin g lever, pivotally connected with the door, and provided with an angular extension at 'its upper end which is pivotally connected with one end of said arm, a latch-plate secured to the side of the door-frame in connection with which the locking-lever operates and means for holding the lever in position, substantially as shown and described.
8. The combination with a door, of a springoperated locking-lever pivotally connected therewith, in a horizontal position and provided with a guide or bearing, an arm pivotally connected with the inner end of said lever, by means of a bolt which passes through a slot in the door, a vertically-arranged ope rating-lever, pivotally connected with the door. and provided at its upper end with an angular extension pivotally connected with one end of said arm, said lever being also provided with a bearing or guide secured to the door. and a latch-plate secured to the frame of the door at one side thereof, in connection with which the locking-lever operates, and means for securing the operating and locking levers in position to lock the door, substantially as shown and described.
4. The combination with a door, of a sprin goperated locking-lever pivotally connected therewith, in a horizontal position and provided with a guide orV bearing, an arm pivotally connected with the inner end of said lever, by means of a bolt which passes through a slot in the door, a vertically-arranged operating-lever, pivotally connected with the door, and provided at its upper end with an angular extension pivotally connected with one end of said arm, said lever being also provided with a bearing or guide secured to the door, and a latch-plate secured to the frame of the door at one side thereof, in connection with which the locking-lever operates. and means for securing the operating and locking levers in position to lock the door consisting of an arm pivotally connected with the pin or bolt by which the locking-lever and its pivoted arm are connected and provided with a flange or extension at its lower end adapted to bear upon a corresponding flange or projection formed on the guide or bearing of the operating-lever, substantially' as shown and described.
5. The combination with a door, of a springoperated locking-lever secured thereto, in a horizontal position, an Varm pivotally connected with the inner end thereof, an operating-lever arranged in a substantially vertical position and pivotally connected with the door, and provided at its upper end with an angular extension which is pivotally connected with one end of said arm, and a latchplate secured to the door-frame at one side in connection with which the locking-lever operates, and an arm pivotally connected with said latch-plate adapted to lock the lockinglever in connection therewith, and means for securing the said arm in the locked position` substantially as shown and described.
6. The combination with a door, of a loci;- ing-lever pivotally connected therewith in a horizontal position an arm pivotally connected at one end with said lever by a boit which passes through a slot in the door, an operating-lever pivotally connected with the door by a pin or bolt which passes therethrough, said lever being provided at its u pper end with an angular extension, one end of which is pivotally connected with the said arm, a latch-plate secured to the side of the IOO IIO

7.
