1 Claim, 2 Drawing Figures SCRAP RUBBER SHREDDING DEVICE SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION A device for shredding scrap rubber having means for cutting scrap into strips and then cutting the strips into small portions, the device including a means for preventing metallic objects from entering the cutting mechanism and means for moving the small portions to a collection area.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS FIG. 1 is a side elevational view of the device, partially in cross section, and
FIG. 2 is a top view of the cutter blade assembly.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT In the drawings the numeral 1 designates a framework in which the device is mounted, and on which is mounted the receiving hopper 2 adapted to receive scrap, such as used tires, 3, and direct them into the upper cutter blades 4, 5, which are rotatably mounted on the supports 6, 6, and which are rotated through the pulleys 7, 7 and belts 8, 8 and motors 9, 9. The cutter blade assembly consists of the upper drum 4 having the peripheral grooves formed therein as 10, 10 and the spaced discs as 11, 11 on the assembly 5, each positioned to travel in the opposing groove 10. Beneath the upper cutter blades is the baffle 12 which will receive the strips of rubber from the upper cutter blade assembly, and extending beneath the extending end of the baffle 12 is the baffle 13 upon which the strips fall from the baffle 12, and which directs the strips into the lower cutter blade assembly consisting of the drum 14, having peripheral grooves and the spaced discs 15, which extend into said grooves, said drum and discs being respectively rotatably mounted on the supports 16, 16 and which are rotated through the pulleys 17, 17, belts 18, 18 and motors 19, 19.
Beneath the lower cutter blade assembly is the conveyor 20 which carries the cut portions of the scrap to a collection area (not shown).
The machine may be mounted on a skid or truck bed 21, if desired, and a conveyor belt 22 suitably mounted to position its delivery terminal immediately above the hopper 2. A magnet 23 may be mounted above the conveyor 22 and designed to control a solenoid switch (not shown) so that when a metallic object passes underneath the magnet, on the conveyor 22, the magnet will activate the solenoid and break the connection with the motor (not shown) operating the conveyor belt 22.
In use, the device may be drawn to the location of the supply of material to be shredded, and as the belt 22 is activated, the tires, or the like, to be shredded, placed on the belt and, in the event metallic articles are inadvertently included, such as where a wheel may still be present, the magnet will be activated when the metallic article passes beneath it, and will stopthe conveyor belt, and an attendant may remove the metal and restart the conveyor 22.
As the scrap passes off of the conveyor 22, it drops into the hopper 2 and on to the upper cutter blades 4, 5 where the scrap will be cut into strips as 23, and the strips 23 will be passed on to the baffle 12, and from there to the baffle l3, and will be turned into a position of longitudinal alignment with the lower cutter blade assembly, and will drop on to the lower cutter blades where they will be cut into small portions as 24, and will be deposited on to the conveyor 25 to be carried to a collection area, (not shown).
What I claim is:
1. A Machine for shredding scrap rubber products such as used automabile tires comprising a framework, a hopper within the framework and adjacent one end thereof, an upper cutter blade assembly rotatably mounted in said framework said assembly including an elongated rotatable drum having peripheral grooves formed in the surface thereof and a cooperating rotatable disc subassembly having spaced discs arranged to intermesh with the grooves in said drum in order to cut the rubber products into elongated strips, a lower cutter blade assembly identical to and spaced below said upper cutter assembly first and second spaced baffle means located in the space between said cutter blade assemblies for turning the elongated strips extruded from the upper assembly to a horzontal position before being fed into the lower assembly and, means mounted in said framework adjacent said cutter assemblies for moving theshredded scrap to a collection area.

Claims (1)

1. A Machine for shredding scrap rubber products such as used automabile tires comprising a framework, a hopper within the framework and adjacent one end thereof, an upper cutter blade assembly rotatably mounted in said framework said assembly including an elongated rotatable drum having peripheral grooves formed in the surface thereof and a cooperating rotatable disc subassembly having spaced discs arranged to intermesh with the grooves in said drum in order to cut the rubber products into elongated strips, a lower cutter blade assembly identical to and spaced below said upper cutter assembly first and second spaced baffle means located in the space between said cutter blade assemblies for turning the elongated strips extruded from the upper assembly to a horzontal position before being fed into the lower assembly and, means mounted in said framework adjacent said cutter assemblies for moving the shredded scrap to a collection area.
