SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 375,276, dated December 20, 1887.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD O. EMERY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at San Diego, in the county of San Diego. and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Insulators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompany ing drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in insulators for telegraph or other electric wires, the object of my invention being to provide a cheap, simple, and effective means-for attaching the wires to the insulator, so that they can be readily detached therefrom when desired, the wires being connected with the insulator in such a manner that they can be stretched without removing the insulator; and with the above ends in view my invention consists in the construction and combination of the parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a sectional vview of an insulator constructed in accord ance with my improvement, and Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the cap or top piece.

The cap-piece D has formed therein a socket, 01, into which the projecting portion 0 will fit, and the sides of this cap-piece are provided at points diametrically opposite with slots E and E, the terminal portions of which extend at an obtuse angle with the vertical portion thereof, the lateral-extending portions of the slots being turned in opposite directions.
The portions Band D of the insulator are preferably made of glass or lava, though other suitable materials may be employed, and between the parts is placed a flexible or rubber washer, F, which will allow a slight spring movement between the parts.
To place a wire in position, the cap-piece is first removed and the wire is passed into the slot in the projecting portion 0. The 'cappiece is then placed over the wire, said wire entering the slots E and E, and by giving the cap-piece a slight turn the wire will be ele vated into the upturned portion of the slot in the projecting portion 0 and will enter theinclined portions of the slots E and E.
By use of the hereinbefore-described device the wire passes through the insulator without a bend, and is held securely in position with-' out the aid of screw-bolts or other extraneous locking means, for as said Wire forms a hearing for the top piece, the pressure of said top piece or cap upon the wire forcing the same upon the washer, so as to prevent the rotation of the cap, and as the upper portions of the slots in the cap extend in opposite directions, it cannot become accidentallyturned, so as to allow the wire to fall below the depending portion 0 in the projecting portion 0.
I claim 1. In an insulator, the combination of the internally-screw-threaded part B, having a central upwardly-projecting portion with a J shaped slot formed transversely therein, and a cap, D, having a socket and slots E and E formed therein, the inner end of the J-shaped slot and the slots E E being arranged diametrically, substantially as and for the purpose set fort-h. v
