In the past various combination match box-pipe packers have been constructed. Such devices may be complex in design and costly to manufacture.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION A lighter including a piper packer and cover lock. The lighter has a case with a main body and a movable cover with a locking depression on the top of the cover. The movable cover pivots on a hinge attached to the top of the main body. The pipe packer or pusher includes two arms pivotally connected to the bottom of the lighter case. One arm is connected to each side of the main body. A generally flat pusher plate is connected to the distal ends of said arms. The length of the arms between the pivot points and the pusherplate is such that the pipe pusher may be pivoted into latching position with the flat pusher plate in engagement with the locking depression on the top of the closed cover.
It is an object of this invention to provide anoncomplex combination lighter and pipe pusher-latch device.
In accordance with these and other objects which will be apparent hereinafter, the instant invention will now be described with particular reference to the accompanying drawing.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING In the Drawing: FIG. 1 is a side view of the device, and FIG. 2 is an end view of the device.
DESCRIPTION OF A PREFERRED EMBODIMENT Referring now to the Drawing, FIGS. 1 and 2, the lighter 2 has a casing including a main body 4 and a cover 6. The cover 6 is connected to the main body 4 by a hinge 8. The cover 6 is biased toward a closed position. A spring (not shown) may be used to biase the cover 6 into a closed position. Near the lower end of the main body 4 are openings 10 and 12. The pusher arms 14 and 16 have end portions that fit into the openings on each side. of the casing. The arms are biased inwardly in order to hold the end portions in the openings. Connected to the distal endof the arms 14 and 16 is a flat packer 18 or pusher or tamping device. The packer 18 is used to engage tobacco in the pipe bowl.
The pipe tamping device may be swung from a lower position shown in FIG. 2 to a locked position shown in FIG. 1. When the tamping device is in a lower position it may be conveniently used for tamping tobacco in a pipe bowl. The arms and pusher may be swung into a locked position to engage the bottom of the flat plate 18 and the flat face 20 of the cover 6. The arms are spaced apart so that the armswill pass around the sides of the cover. The location of the pusher device on the arms is such that the bottom of the flat plate will move across the top of the lighter cover 6 to lock the cover shut.
The arms may be constructed of a single piece of wire with an in-tuming projection on each end. The ends are placed in the holes in the main body of the lighter casing. The central portion is bent in a generally U-shaped fashion with the lower portion placed in engagement with and spot welded to the plate 18. The bottom of the U-shaped wire is generally flat.
The instant invention has been shown and described herein in what is considered to be the most practical and preferred embodiment. It is recognized, however, that departures may be made therefrom within the scope of the invention and that obvious modifications will occur to a person skilled in the art.
