Description

Aug. 30, 1932. l.. v. ARoNsoN CIGAR LIGHTER Filed Aug. 1e, 1928 Patented Aug. 30, 14932 UNITED STATES LOUIS V. .AIBONSON, F NEW-ABI, )TEW JERSEY crean LIGHTER Application led August 16, 1928. Serial No. 300,057.l
This invention relates to cigar lighters and has as an object the rovision of a lighter having a closure for t e fuel filling opening of the lighter and serving also as a cover for the t pyrophoric element containing well ofthe device, leaving no parts, or only a mmimum number of parts, projecting beyond the conlines of the fuel receptacle of the lighter.
It is an object of the invention to provide a. closure for the fuel opening of a cigar lighter which will not become detached from the lighter in the pocket of the user.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a closure for a fuel opening of a lighter which will present a neat appearance.
It is a further object of the invention to provide such a closure which may be very readily opened for lling.
Further objects of the invention will appear from the following description when read in connection with the accompanying drawing showing an illustrative embodiment of the invention, and wherein Fig. 1 is a plan view;
Fig. 2 is a vertical section on line 2--2 of lFig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a detail section corresponding to lqig. 2 showing a modified form of catch.
As shown the fuel receptacle of the lighter to which the device is applied is provided with a wall 11, the side walls of the receptacle 10 extending therebeyond as shown at 12 to provide a recess 13 into which the closure 14 swings.
The closure 14 is shown as pivoted about a pintle 15 passing through the hinged portion 16 of the closure. To hold the closure 14 in closed position according to the form of the invention shown in Figs. 1 and 2, there is shown a latch member 17 pivoted at 18 in recess 13 and projecting at 19 through a slot 20 in the margin 12 of the side wall of receptacle 10 so as to be engageable by the finger or thumb nail of the user for actuation, the latch 5 member 17 being held in retracted position by means of a spring 21 anchored to a pin 22 carried by the flange 23 of the cover plate 24 which bears the closure 14. To coact with latch 17, the closure 14 is shown as bearing a groove 25, the lower margin 26 of the groove being rounded so that the closure may be snapped shut against action of s ring 21.
To provide a vapor-tight joint tween the closure 14 and the fuel opening 27 of the receptacle, there is shown a gasket 28 sur rounding the opening and a boss 29 is desirably provided upon the closure topress against the gasket. A tube for housing a pyrophoric element is shown at 30 passing through the fuel receptacle housing a. spring 3l for pressure of a pyrophoric element, not shown, against sparking mechanism and a pressure screw 32 is shown having screwthreaded engagement with the interior of 'tube 30, the closure 14 serving as a cover for said screwthreaded tube.
In the form of the invention shown in Fig.
3, a sliding catch 33 is shown housed in an opening in the closure 14 and spring pressed to normal position by compression spring 34 seated in a well in the thickness of closure 14. To slide the catch 33, there is shown a release button 35 carried by the catch 33 and acting in a slot 36 in the closure 14. The catch 33 is shown as coacting with aA notch 37 in the plate 23', the end of the catch being beveled as shown at 38 Sothat the closure may be snapped shut. In this form of the device the spring 31 is shown as projecting from the tube 30 and when the catch is released will cause the cover to fly open.
To cause the closure 14 to spring to partially open position, the form of the invention shown in Fig. 1 may be provided with a spring, as a leaf spring 39, which will be flattened when the closure is locked shut.
The operation of the device will be clear from the above description. Minor changes may be made in the physical embodiment of the invention within the scopel of the appended claims without departing from the spirit thereof.
I claim: l
1. The combination with a fuel receptacle adapted to carry pyrophoric lighting mechanism at` one end thereof, said receptacle comprising an end wall having a fuel filling opening and side walls projecting beyond said end wall to define a closure housing recess,of a closure hinged in said recess, and a.
gasket surounding -said opening and compressed by said closure when in closed posltion.
2. The combination with a fuel receptacle adapted to carry pyrophoric lighting mechanism at one end thereof, said rece tacle comprising an end wall having a uel filling opening and a recess exterior thereof conforming substantially with the outline of the side walls of the receptacle, of a closure hinged in said recess lying iiush with the margins thereof when closed, a gasket surrounding said opening and compressed b said closure in closed position, and a, cate to hold said closure closed.
. 3. The combination with a fuel receptacle adapted to carry pyrophoric lighting mechanism at one end thereof, a wall of said receptacle having a fuel filling opening, and a pyrophoric element housing tube opemng throu h said Wall adjacent said iillin opening, o a closure for said fuel opening inged to said receptacle, and a spring in said tube compressed by said closure when closed to press upon said element, said spring actin to lift said closure when the latter is release and a catch'to hold said closure and said spring compressed.
4. he combination with a fuel receptacle adapted to carry pyrophoric lighting mechanism at one end thereof, said receptacle comprising opening and side walls projecting beyond said end wall to define a closure housing recess, of a closure hinged in said recess, a gasket surrounding said opening and compressed by said closure when in closed position, and resilient means to press said closa closure member for ure toward open position.
. 5.` The combinati-on with a fuel receptacle adapted to carry pyrophoric lighting mechanism at one end thereof, of a closure member having a disk-like face for the other end 0f said receptacle and movable with respect thereto, the periphery of said closure member when viewed s idewise conforming substantially with the periphery of said receptaclewhen the latter means for retaining said closure member in position closing said receptacle, said means being operable from the exterior surface of said closure member.
6. The combination with a fuel receptacle adapted to carry pyrophoric lighting mechanism at one end thereof, and a spring in said receptacle, said spring adapted to bias a p yrophoric element into predetermined posltlon, of means for closing the other end of said receptacle and for holding said spring under compression, said means comprising Y said other end of said receptacle and movable with respect thereto, and .means for retaining said closure member 1n position closing said rece tacle.
