PENCIL POCKET.
No. 374.131. Patented Nov. 29, 1887.
/ll lllll/l/ llllllllllllllllll/lllllllll//ll/ lm UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALLISON M. ROSCOE, OF DUBOIS, PENNSYLVANIA.
PENClL- POCKET.
SPBCIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 374,131, dated November 29, 1887.
Application filed April 7, 1887. Serial No. 234,056.
To all whom 't may concern;
the article or articles to be held.
Be itknown that I, ALLIsoN lVL'RosooE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dubois, in the county of Clearfield and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in PenciLPockets; and I do declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a partof this specification.
This invention relates to devices to be secured within the pocket, or to be attached to the garment at any desired point, for holding pens, pencils, instruments of various kinds, and an endless variety of objects which it is not convenient to carry loosely in the pocket.
The object of the invention is the produo tion ofa simple, cheap, and efficient devicefor the above purpose, and one which will be selfsecuring when placed in the pocket of the garment and will occupy a minimum amount of room.
The improvement consists, essentially, of a holder composed of a front and back united at their ends and open at its top and bottom, a flap connected with the front plate to clamp the edge of the poeketand hold the device in position, and a strip projeeted upward from the back and forming a guide to direct the pencil, 830., into the holder when thrust quickly therein. The several parts are preferably formed of rnbber or similar elastic material, and of one piece. p
The improvement further consists in the novel features, hereinafter more fully set forth,clain1ed,and shown in the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective View of a holder of my Construction embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a horizontal sectional View of a modified form; Fig. 3, a horizontal section-al View of a still further modified form.
The device or holder is composed of the front and back plates, A and B, respectively, secured together at their ends only, so that a space is left between them for the reception of It is open (No model.)
at its top and bottom, and the flap a is connected with the top edge of the plate A, and the guide-strip b projects from the back plate, B. The several parts may be independent and Secured together; but it is preferred to have them of a single piece and made of rnbber or other elastic material. The-front and back may be parallel orinclined to each other withont departing from the nature of ny invention, and in practice it is contemplated to make give greater stability and insnre a firm grip-.
ping of the article by the holder, one of the plates, preferably the front plate, is flnted, as shown in Fig. 3, or a fluted or eorrugated strip, A may extend from the plate, as shown in Fig. 2. The uneven surface presented by either the corrugated strip or the fluted front plate will hold the pencil or analogous article from lateral displacement and more firnily against vertical displacement and better adapts the holder for retaining articles of uneven diameter. i
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, s-
1. A holder for the purposes described, composed of the front and back plates united at their edges only, having the top and botton open, the flap Secured to the front plate, and the guidestrip projected up from the back plate, substantally as set forth.
2. As an improved article ofnanufacture, a holder, for the purpose described, consisting of a single piece of elastic material com posed of the front and back plates united at ICQ one of the plates being corrugated substan- In testimonywhereof I affix my signature in iialy as described, and for the purpose speer presence of two witnesses.
4. The herein-described hoider, forthepur- ALLISON M. ROSCOE. 5 poses described, omposed of the front and back plates, one of said plates* being fiuted, witnesses: Whereby its nner side is corrugated, subsban- A. S. MOULTHROP, tially as described, for the purpose specified. D. S. HERRON.
