CORSET AND DRESS PROTECTOR.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 361,494, dated April 19, 1887.

Application filed July 17, 1886. Serial No. 208,237.

To all whom it may concern.-

- ple device which can be worn as a separate garment to protect the corset, dress, and sleeves. of the dress or outer garment from being soiled 'by perspiration from the armpits, or laid off at pleasure; and, second, to make the same so that it will fit any person and not be liable to displacement by the movements of the wearer or materially add to or take the place of the other clothing.

I attain these objects in p the device constructed as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents the improved device in position as worn; and Fig. 2 is a perspective view.

The body parts A and arm parts Aon each side are made of double layers of silesia or other similar cloth. They are cut in the form of a crescent, and the upper layer of the part A and the upper layer of A are joined by a seam at the top or inner curved edge of the crescent, so that they are separate from the under layers at this point, which under layers are also joined to each other at their corresponding edge in a similar manner; but the upper and under layers are sewed together at the outer edge or curve of the crescent, so that a piece of water-proof material placed between the layers and extended over the central seam will be retained in place between the layers and make the samemoisture-proof throughout, including the point at the central seam.

To the front and back edges of the parts A are attached crosspieces B B, extending from the top near the central seam, where the inner curved edges are joined, down to the lower edge, and tapering thence to a point at the center,to which strings or tapes Gare attached, by which the cross-pieces may be tied together (No model.)

in front and at the back to hold the protectors against the body.

The strings and parts B B in front are adapted to be tied up over the bust to bring the protectors up against the body at their lower edges and keep them in their proper places.

Non-elastic shoulder-straps a are attached permanently to the back at b, the point of the junction of the parts AAof the protector, and provided with eyelets to engage with hooks attached to the front at b, by which the protector is adjusted upwardly under the arm and adapted to fit different persons. It is essential that the shoulder-straps should be attached at this point, to properly hold the protector up, and they should fit close,in order to I prevent them working off the shoulders; and for this reason they must beloose at one end,in order to be properly fitted and fastened in putting the protector on and to be loosened in taking it off.

Elastic arm-straps a are attached permanently at both ends to the parts A, to holdthe" edges up to the arm. It is not essential that there shall be so close a fit on the arm at this point as at the shoulder, and for this reason a strap permanently attached is used, and made elastic to better adapt it to different sizes of arms.

which shows a waist completely enveloping a considerable portion of the body of the wearer; also of patent to Hervey, No. 267,202, of November 7, 1882, which shows a different form of body and arm parts, and has the shoulderstraps likewise permanently attached at both ends, and is without means, other than the elasticity of the strap, for adjusting. The body parts extend down to the waist and are provided with a separate fastening at this point;

but my protector is different from these in its several parts, and as a whole, and affords means for effecting a positive adjustment at the shoulders, which none of these docs.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
