To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ABRAHAM L. ZORKOW- SKI, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a new and useful improvement in Corsets and Garment- Supporters, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to corsets, and con1- prises means whereby certain parts of the corset can be folded or rolled up, which parts, when so folded or rolled up, are by employment of suitable fastening devices retained in position,and thereby compose a resting-place to support a skirt, bustle, or any other article of wearing apparel, all as hereinafter described, and specifically pointed out in the claims. Referring to the accompanying drawings, wherein like letters of reference point out similar parts on each figure, Figure 1 is an outside back view of a pair of corsets illustrating my invention, showing the depending flaps unrolled, one of said flaps lying under and the other one lying over a strip of webbing. Fig. 2 is a similar outside back view of a pair of corsets, showing the flaps rolled up and held in position by means of fastening devices. Fig. 8 isa rear view of another pair of corsets having a solid back and provided with a single folding flap supplied with fastening devices to hold said flap in position as agarrnentsupport when rolled up. Fig. 4 is a similar view showing said flap lying flat under a strip of webbing for employment asagarmentsup port. Fig. 5 is a similar view showing said flap fastened up in a roll to form a garmentsupport. Fig. 6 represents a modified form of the strip.

A is the back of the corset, which may have back lacing, as shown in Fig. l, or side lac ing, as shown in Fig. 3. The lower portion of the corset is provided with one or more openings, a a" (6, said openings, to prevent their spreading apart too wide, being bridged over with a strip, B, made preferably of elastic webbing. Said openings are so constructed as to be enabled to be covered over with a flap, A A A", which flaps can be maintained flat in 50 position by slipping the lower end thereof under the strip B, as plainly shown in Figs. 1 and 4. Said strip B may be entire in its length and be permanently attached, asshown in Figs. 1 to 55, inclusive, or be a two-part band, as illustrated in Fig. 6, which can be shortened by buckling up or any wellknown A A A represent flaps, which, in carrying out my invention as garment-supports, are folded or rolled up, as plainly shown in Figs. 2 and 5. They are provided with fastening devices consisting of buttons 0 and loops 0, preferably elastic, which loops are passed through eyelet-holes c or the like on the body A of the corset, and are from thence returned round, so as to encircle and embrace the rolled-up flap, the extreme end of said loops 0 being passed over, so as to engage the respective button a; but I desire to be understood as not confining myself to this special mode of retaining the flaps in a rolled-up position. Any suitable fastening device adapted for the purpose will be within the scope of my invention.

Corsets generally have a series of longitudical bones or other stiffening material held in pockets, (see (1 d in the drawings,) some of which stiffeners extend the full length of the corset from about the upper edge, e, to the lower edge, e. In carrying out my invention such of said stiffeners d as lie above the flaps A A A must extend only down to the upper line of said flaps-say to about the dotted line xx-for it is manifest that said flaps could not be folded or rolled up if the vertical stiffeners d were continued therein. Nevertheless it is necessary that said flaps should have a certain degree of stiffness and rigidity, and this I accomplish by placing within said flaps, betwe n the outer and inner layers of fabric of which they are composed, or in pockets formed therein, strengthening-ribs f f, arranged at about right angles to the bones d d. The ribs ff can be formed either by folding over or overlapping pieces of textile fabric, and then 5 stitching the same in place, or by the insertion of ribs of whalebone, cord, or other material well known in the trade. By this means the flaps are so constructed that they will readily yield to the form of the wearer when there has been great difficulty in securing said article in proper position. By my improved garment-support, strings attached to such ar ticles, or any article of underwear, are tied around the waist, and, resting upon the extending rolled flap, are permanently adjusted in proper place without any risk of the attached article falling off or twisting round out of position. These desirable results are attained by my improvement without increasing the .weight of the apparel.

My present application contemplates forming the flaps A A A of any desired length and width, and forming them as integral parts of the fabric composing the corsets; but for some purposes I propose to make said flaps detachable, as a modification of myinvention; but it is not necessary to herein describe such modified construction, as the same is described in another application for Letters Patent of even date herewith.

Having now fully described my invention,

what I olaim,jand desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A corset having in the rear section there.-

of one or more openings, a a a said openings bridged over with a strip, B, each of said openings having an overlying depending flap, A A A connected at or near the upper edge to the rear section, A, and having their sides and lower edge free, said flaps supplied with interior horizontal stiffeners, f, and adapted and intended to lie flat under said strip B, and further adapted and intended to be rolled up as a garment support and retained in such rolled-up position by employment of fastening devices as c c 0 all arranged as set forth.

2. The Within-described garment-supporter, consisting of one or more depending flaps, A A A supplied with interior stiffeners,f, and having buttons candloops c, said loops adapted to pass through eyelet-holes J and be returned over the respective rolled-up flap and then taken onto and engage a coincident button, 0, as and for thepurpose intended, substantially as described.

3. A combined corset and garment-supporter consisting of the following elements: av

corset having upon its rear section one or more openings, at a a said openings being bridged over with a strip, B, one or more integral depending flaps, A A A said flaps having inserted therein horizontal parallel stiffeners f,

and being provided with buttons 0 and loops 0, all arranged and constructed as set forth and shown, as and for the purpose intended,

substantially as described.
