Description

(No Model.)
I E. MONEUSE.
- COVER 0R LID. No. 367,653. Patented Aug. 2, 1887.
INVENTOI? ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELIE MONEUSE, OF MAMARONEOK, NEW YORK.
COVER OR LID.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 367,653, dated August 2, 1887.
Application filed February 3,1887. Serial No. 126,450. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ELIE MoNEUsE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mamaroneck, in the county of \Vestchester and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Covers or Lids, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in covers or lids, as set forth in the following specification and claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a central transverse section of a cover and rings. Fig. 2 is a plan view of Fig. 1.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, the letter A designates a lid or cover provided with a flange or bearing-edge, E. The bearing-edge E is provided with a bearing-face on each side of the lid or cover. The cover or lid can thus be reversed or placed in position with either face turned up. In case one face of the lid A becomes worn or injured, the other face can be exposed for-use. The lid A can be pierced,or provided with an aperture, K, for the insertion of a hook or instrument by which the cover A can be manipulated.
The cover A may be used to close an aperture either directly, or to close an aperture by the aid of one or more rings or supports, B O. The rings or supports B G can be provided with bearing-edges F G H I, provided with bearing-faces on each side of the several rings or supports B O. The rings or supports 13 C can thus bereversed to expose both faces to use or wear.
The reversibility of the cover A and supports 13 G will be found very useful-for example, in case the cover A and supports B O are used to cover stoves or heating apparatus. In case one side of the cover A or supports B C were continuously exposed to heat or fire, the cover A and supports B 0 might warp, sink, or become injured. By reversing the cover A and supports 13 C, as indicated, such warping, sinking, or injury can be avoided, either whollyor in part.
To make the coverA and supports B 0 light, said cover and supports may be hollowed out or provided with grooves or channels L. In Fig. 1 the cover A and supportsB C are shown as being carried by an apertured surface or plate, D, which in ay be the top plate of a stove or furnace.
In the drawings, one of the bearing-faces of the edge E rests on a bearing-face of the edge F, one of the bearing-faces of the edge G rests on a bearing-face of the edge H, and a bearing-face of the edge I rests on the plate D. As seen in Fig. 1, the thickness of the cover A and supports B 0 should be so proportioned that the upper faces of the cover and supports will always be on a level or flush with one an-.
other, so that objects can be placed on the cover and supports without upsettin WVhat I claim as new,aud desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A cover or lid, A, provided with abearing-edge, E, having a bearingface on each side of the cover or lid, substantially as set forth.
2. A cover or lid, A, having one or more channels or grooves, L, and provided with a bearing-edge, E, having a bearing face on each side of the cover or lid, substantially as set forth.
3. A ring or annular support, such as B, provided with bearing edges, such as F G, having bearing-faces on each side of the ring or support, substantially as set forth.
4-. .A ring or annular support, such as B, having a groove or channel, L, and provided with bearing-edges, such as F G, having bearing-faces on each side of the ring or support, substantially as set forth. 7
5. A cover or lid, A, having an aperture, K and provided with a bearing-edge, E, having a bearingface on each side of the cover or lid, substantially as set forth.
6'. The combination, with a reversible cover,
A, of reversible supports BC, the thickness of the cover A and supports 13 0 being so pro portioned that the upper faces of the cover and supports will always be on a level with one another, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
