LAMP-BRACKET.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 366,863, dated July 19, 1887.

Application filed April 27, 1887. Serial No. 236,367. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.- Be it known that I, Esau T. NAYLOR, of the city and county of San Franciscofitate ofCalifornia, have invented an Improvement in Lamp-Brackets; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.

My invention relates to that class of lampbrackets which are provided with adjustable clamping-arms for securing the lamp on the bracket; and my invention consists in the peculiarly constructed and operating clampingarm hereinafter described.

The object of my invention is to provide a simple and effective device for holding the lamp on the bracket.

Referring to the accompanying drawing for a more complete explanation of my invention, the figure is a perspective view of my lamp-bracket.

A is a bracket,having a lamp-rest, (z. The clamping-arm B consists of a single piece of spring-wire bent at its middle at b, thence passing up through holes in the stem of the bracket A, forming a shank or standard, I), twisted at its top,thence turned at right angles and separating to form the handle-loop I)", crossing at Z), bent oppositely to form the clampingloop b, and havingits ends bent outwardly to form entrance-guides D The shank or standard I) may be moved up and down in the bracket, and is fixed in the position to which it may be adjusted by a setscrew, C.

D is a lamp supported in the rest a of the bracket and clamped by the loop I) of the arm B. In order to adjust it to this position, the handleloop If is grasped and its sides pressed toward each other, whereby the clam ping-loop I)" is expanded; its ends separating and forming a guide for the lamp, which is slipped by them and into the loop I). Vhen the pressure of the hand is 1'elieved,the clamp-loop springs back and holds the lamp.

To remove the lamp, apply the pressure again with one hand,and with the other take away the lamp. The clamp is a very effective one, and holds the lamp with such force that it will not be jarred or knocked from the bracket.

The object of the vertical adjustment ot'the clamping-arm is to adapt it for holding both lamps which have a shank and those which have none, for in the latter case the arm may be raised up high enough to cause its loop to embrace the collar on top of the 1amp-bowl.

I am aware that'it is not new to attach to lamp-brackets means for clamping the lamp and holding it to position, and I also know that spring-arms have been used in this connection and that they have been made vertically adjustable. I claim none of these, but confine myselfto the particular character of arm I have described.

Having thus described my invention,what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A lamp-bracket attachment for holding a lamp to its place, consisting of a single piece of spring-wire bent centrally to form a shank or standard by which it is secured to the bracket, turned at right angles to the standard portion and bent and crossed to form two loops, the end of one 01 which opens or ex pands as the other is contracted, and vice versa, whereby said end loop may receive, hold, and release the lamp, substantially as herein described.
