MINERS CANDLESTICK.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 366,320, dated July 12, 1887.

To aZZ whom, it may concerm Be it known that I, DAVID B. JAMES, of

the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Miners Candlesticks; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.

My invention relates to a novel candlestick for miners use.

It consists in the devices which I shall here inafter fully. describe and claim.

Referring to the accompanying drawing for a more complete explanation of my invention, the figure is a perspective view of my device, showing the manner of holding the candle in place.

The coil A is formed of one or more turns of wire, and is made of suificient diameter to allow a candle to be placed in it loosely. From the upper side of the coil the wire is carried upward and curved, as shown, so as to form a pointed hook, B, which may be hung upon a projection of rock within the mine or upon other points where it is desired to support the candle. From the lower end of the coil the wire extends backward, and another coil of one or more turns is formed at C, from which the wire is again carried forward beneath and beyond the first coil, A, as shown at D. The

0 elasticity of the second coil forces the arm I) beneath the first coil, A,when there is no candle within it, but when the candle has been placed within this coil, so that its lower end projects just beneath the coil the arm D will 3 5 press against the side of the candle, and will thus hold it firmly within the coil,and prevent its slipping out. XVhen the candle is burned down very short, the arm D may be allowed to pass beneath the coil and the bottom of the candle will rest upon this arm, the candle bc ing held upright by the turns of the coil until it is all burned out. The arm D has its end pointed, so that it may be thrust into a timher or into a crevice in the rock. The coil 0 Serial No. 212,265. (No model.)

is desired to hold the candle in this manner,

,instead of by means of the hook B, before described. The weight of the parts which project upon each side of the candle holding coil A is such that when hung loosely by the hook B the candle will. remain in a nearly or quite upright position, and by this construction either the hook or the point D may be employed to suspend the candlestick,according to convenience.

I am aware a miners candlestick has been constructed of a single piece of metal, having a coil or return bend, which forms a handle, said candlestick being also provided with a socket within which the candle is held, and a pointed end. Such construction I therefore do not broadly claim as my invention, wherein the candlestick is composed of a single wire bent to form two coils, and having a pointed hook at one end by which the devicemay be hung upon a projection of rock, and a pointed arm adapted to be thrust into a timbenor into a crevice in the rock.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to sccure by Letters Patent, is-

1. An improved candlestick composed of a continuous piece of wire having the two coils A and C and a spring arm, D, extending from the coil C, bearing against the side of the eaudle beneath the coil A, and having its end pointed, substantially as herein described.

2. The candle-holding coil A, the coil C, and elastic arm D, projecting beyond and beneath the coil A, in combination with the hook-ex- 8o tension 13, substantially as herein described.
