No. 190,894. Patented May15, 1877.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEVERETT H. OLMSTED, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 190,894, dated May 15, 1877; application filed May 1, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LEVERETT H. OLM- sTED, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Devices for Attaching Lamp- Ohimneys to Wick-Tubes, of which the following is a specification:
This invention comprises an improvement upon the lamps shown and described in the Letters Patent No. 188,533, issued to me March 20, 1877 and its object is to provide for the ready attachment of the chimneyholder to the wick-tube, or its detachment therefrom, and also to provide for the facile adjustment of said chimney-holder to bring the bottom of the lamp-chimney into the most efficient and desirable position with reference to the top of the Wick-tube.
To this end my said invention embraces a chimney-holder composed of an elastic device for griping the wick-tube and exertingafrictional holdthereon, a base-plate having the aforesaid tube-grasping device upon its under side, and upwardly-projecting fingers fixed upon said base for receiving and retaining the bottom of the chimney in requisite relation with the top of the wick, the whole combined to secure the result hereinbefore indicated.
Figure 1 is a central vertical longitudinal sectional view representing my said invention, and Fig. 2 is a side view thereof. Fig. 3 is a side view, and Fig. 4 an inverted-plan view, showing a somewhat modified construction of the same.
The chimney-holder is composed of the base e, the upwardly-projecting fingers f, attached to the upper side of the said base, and having shoulders at their upper extremities to secure the lower end of the lamp-chimney, and the elastic griping device 9, for holding on the wick-tube m of the lamp, as shown in Fig. 1. This griping device 9 is preferably composed of two or more downwardly-projecting springs, as represented in Figs. 1 and 2, arranged in such relation with each other as to clasp the wick-tube between them when applied to the latter, thereby retaining the chimney-holder upon the wick-tube, and at the same time beingcapable of vertical adjustment to bring said holder, and consequent ly the bottom of the chimney, into the best relation to the top of the wick-tube.
When desired, the griping device maybe formed of an annular spring, as represented in Figs. 3 and 4, a longitudinal slot, a, enabling the same to exert the necessary contractile action upon and around the wick-tube at any portion of the length thereof to eifect the objects of my invention.
When desired, the elastic griping device g, and also the fingers, may be formed in one piece with the base-plate, by stamping, striking up, or other suitable means.
7 What I claim as my invention is- The chimney-holder composed of an elastic device, 9, for clasping the wick-tube, the baseplate 6, and the upwardly-projecting fingers f, the whole combined and arranged for use substantially as described.
L. H. OLMSTED.
