COMBINED BAG AND TWINE HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 353,435, dated November 30, 1886.

To all whom it may concern..-

Be it known that I, JOSEPH ALLEN, of Palmyra, in the county ofWayne and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Bag and Twine Holder; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to an improvement in combined bag and twine holder, the object of the same being to provide a neat and stiff de vice adapted to be suspended above the counter, that shall combine simplicity and economy in construction with durability and efliciency in use. A further object is to provide a device of this character that can be easily taken apart for packing and put together by an unskilled person without the aid of any tools; and with these ends in view my invention consists in the parts and combinations of of parts as will be more fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a View in perspective of the complete device. Fig. 2 isa view in longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a view of one of the bag-supporting arms. Fig. 4 is a detached View of 0 the plates between which the bag-supporting arms are clamped. Fig. 5 is a view of one of the braces and the plate to which the braces are attached. Fig. 6' is a view of the brush or other holder. Fig. 7 is a view of the bag- 5 holder, and Fig. 8 is a View of one of the pins with the handle attached.

A represents a stiff rod or hanger, consisting, essentially, of the sections a, a, and a. The section a is screw-threaded at its opposite o ends, and is attached at its lower end to the screw-threaded boss 12 of the plate B. This plate B rests on the plate B, which former can be angular, as shown in the drawings, or of any other shape, and is provided on its 5 lower face with a series of V-shaped grooves, 1), arranged substantially as shown in Fig. 4, which register with corresponding grooves formed on the upper face of the plate B. This plate B corresponds in size and shape to the plate B, and is provided centrally with an opening, which registers with a similarlyshaped opening in the plate B and with the screw-threaded opening in the boss I) of the plate B. The plates Band B are secured together by the bolt B which latter passes through the plates B and B, and into the screw-threaded boss I) of the plate B.

Between the plates B and B are clamped the bag-supporting arms 0. These supports radiate from the plates B and B, and are made of wire strips bent centrally to resemble the letter V. The two arms or members of the bent strip are bent around to form the rings 0, and the free ends of said arms, which are of spring-metal wire, are then bent downwardly at right angles to the main body of the wire, and then upwardly, forming V-shaped Clasps or hooks. The extreme ends of the clasps or hooks thus formed rest in close contact with rings 0, which latter form guards and prevent the bag-holding pins which are supported by the clasps or hooks from being displaced. A

series of these bent supporting arms are clamped at the central portion between the plates B B, and are prevented from displacement by the grooves Z),forn1ed on the adjacent faces of said plates.

The bag-holding pins D are adapted to reach from one end of the bent supporting-arm to the other end, or from one end of one supporting-arm to the adjacent end of the next arm, and each is provided at one end with a loop adapted to he slipped over the upper end of one clasp or hook, while the opposite end of the pin is provided with a pointed end triangular in cross-section, and is adapted to rest on an adjacent hook. These pins are removable, and hence when it is desired to fill the same with bags it is simply necessary to remove the pins and apply a handle, J or a handle of any construction to the pins, which converts the same into a gimlet and permits it to penetrate a great number of bags with out exertion and without injuring the hands.

The arms 0 are provided with the rings a, formed integral therewith, into which are secured the braces E, which prevent the arms from lateral displacement, and the braces E, which prevent the arms from bending downward. The braces E are formed in pairs, as shown, and each consists of a strip of wire having two rings, (7, formed at or near its central portion, the two arms of each brace being bent downwardly and connected at their free ends to the rings of arm 0, as before described. The rings d, formed on the braces E, are slipped over the lugs d, formed on the upper surfaces of the plate F, the latter being secured to the screw-threaded upper end of the section a of the stem. After the parts are thus secured together, by turning the stemsection a, which is provided on one end with right-hand screw-threads and on the other end with left-hand screw-threads, the platesF and B are moved farther apart and the braces E tightened.

The plate F is provided on its upper face with a boss, f, having a screw-thread opening therein, into which is screwed the lower end of the stem-section a. threaded end of this section a is screwed the plate G, having a series of openings, 9, therein,

' through which are passed the holders 9. These holders are preferably U -shaped withoutwardly or hook-shaped ends, and are removably secured in position by passing the hookshaped ends through the holes in the plate from the upper side thereof; but it is evident that instead of making the holders doubleor, that is, providing each holder with two hooks-they can be made single, as shown in Fig. 6, and answer all necessary purposes. These holders are adapted to hold brushes and other small articles of trade. The plate G is also provided with a screw-threaded boss, into which is screwed the lower end of the stemsection a The upper end of this section is provided with a hook, by which the device is suspended.

To the lower face of plate B, near opposite sides thereof, are secured rings or loops h for the attachment of the twine-holder I, which latter consists of a wire frame having loops t for its attachment to the plate B, loops i for the pin t' ,which latter passes through theball of twine, and the loop i through which the twine passes.

Itis evident that numerous slight changes in the construction and relative arrangement of the several parts might be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention, and hence I would have it understood that I do not confine myself to the exact construction shown and described, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.

Having fully described my invention,what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a combined bag and twine holder, the combination, with a rigid stem and plates attached thereto, of a series of arms clamped between the plates and provided at their outer ends with spring-hooks and pins removably attached to said spring-hooks.

2. In a combined bag and twine holder, the combination, with a stem and plates attached thereto, of a series of arms clamped between the plates, pins secured to the outer end of To the upper screw-,

said arms, and a twine-holder suspended below the plates.

3. The combination, with a stem and plates rigidly secured thereto, the latter being provided with grooves. as described, of the arms clamped between the plates and pins secured to the arms.

4. The pins, each having a ring at one end and triangular point at the other end, and a removable handle adapted to engage the ring, substantially as set forth.

5. The combination, with a stem, supporting-arms rigidly secured thereto, and pins secured to the outer ends of the supportingarms, of a plate secured to the stem above the supporting-arms, and braces connecting said plate and supportingarms, substantially as set forth.

6. In a combined bag and twine holder, the combination, with the stem, arms, and pins, of the platelocated above the arms. the braces. substantially as described, conneetin g the plate and arms, and a twine-holder.

7. The combination,with the sectional stem, the plates B and B, the arms secured between said plates, and the pins, of the plate located above the arms, braces connecting said latter plate and the arms, and the lateral braces, all of the above parts combined substantially as set forth.

8. The combination,with a rigid stem,plates secured thereto, and bag-supporting arms secured between the plates, of the plates G, secured to the stem, aseries of hooks removably secured to said plate G, and a twine-holder located below the bag-supporting arms.

9. The combination, with the sectionalstem and the plates F and G, connecting the sections of said stem, of bag-supporting arms secured to the lower end of the stem, braces connecting the plate F and bag-supporting arms, and hooks secured to the plate G, substantially asset forth.

10. In a combined bag and twine holder, the combination, with the sectional stem having a hook shaped upper end, of bag supporting arms rigidly secured to the lower end of the stem, and a twine holder located below the bag-supporting arms, substantially as set forth.

11. In a combined bag and twineholder, the combination, with a stem, plates secured to the stem, and bag-supporting arms clamped between said plates, of a twine-holder hinged to the lower face of one of said plates.

12. In a combined bag and twine holder, the combination, with a stem, plates secured thereto, and-arms clamped between said plates, of the wire twine-holding frame hinged to the lower face of one of said plates, substantially as set forth.
