A41d 25/02 U.S. Cl. 2-150 1 Claim ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A novel necktie combination comprises a conventional four-in-hand tie with a portable, adjustable and removable knot. The combination permits a conventional necktie to be placed around the collar and then the portable knot slipped over the ends and adjusted against the collar, thereby eliminating the tying and untying operation, wear and tear on the tie but permitting use of a basically conventional tie and a novel knot which may or'may not correspond with the color scheme of. the tie itself as desired.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Many patents have issued over the years which are. designed to simplify the matter of dressing with a four-inhand tie 'by eliminating the tying and untying process. These have invariably comprised What might be described as a pre-tied" arrangement wherein the four-inhand knot is formed around a device Whichis inserted into or surrounds the collar and the dressing and undressing comprises the step of attaching this pre-tied com. bination to the collar of the wearer. Such devices, of course, necessitate the use of special necktie arrangements in each case, do not permit the use of existing conventional tiesin most cases, and where the latter is true, their employment in connection with conventional ties results in having practically no necktie left at all when certain types of knots are formed. Previous device's also provide no flexibility insofar as tightening of loosening of the knot is concerned and also no variety .as to the size and shape of the knot insofar as style or color is concerned. Certain types of so-called string-ties use a vertically traveling fastener but these are entirely unlike my removable knot and are not adapted to cloth ties.

SUMMARY I have discovered that by providing a completely portable or removable knot of my invention I am ableto overcome all of the disadvantages of previous inventions of this class and provide a real convenience, comfort, and economy to the well dressed male. The knot of my invention may be described as pre-formed rather than pre-tied as is the case with all previous inventions. By employing any existing ties in the gentlemans wardrobe, slipping these around the collar, and then slipping my knot up over the ends against the collar, I am able to eliminate the troubles and wear and tear of tying and untying four-in-hand knots and achieve an improved appearance, greater flexibility, and comfort, as will be evident from my description which follows.

DESCRIPTION OF A PREFERRED EMBODIMENT Referring now to the drawings, there is seen first the body 1 of a conventional fo-ur-in-hand necktie. The body 1 may or may not include an ornamental design 2, consisting of stripes or other ornamentation, or it may be of solid color, neither of which is fundamental to the operation of my invention. The body 1 of the necktie may comprise a front section 3 which is generally exposed to view and a back section 4 which is usually concealed from view. A neck portion 5 surrounds the collar or neck of the wearer. 7

My portable, removable knot 6 is equipped with an upper opening 7 and a lower opening 8 which may best 'be seen on FIG. 2 and FIG. 3. The upper opening 7 which may be of circular or oval cross-section and may be generally larger than the lower opening 8 which may be likewise of either cross-section, although this is not entirely necessary. The rear end of the body portion 6 may be split along a substantially vertical line 9, best seen on FIG. 3 On opposite facing edges of split 9 are located clips 10 which are positioned along the parallel edges 11 of the split 9., These also are not entirely necessary but may be used to facilitate the placing of the knot upon the tie, either by clipping them together before sliding the knot up on the tie or clipping them together after the knot is in substantially final position for wear. I may, of course, use an entirely solid knot and merely slip it up over the ends of the tie. I may also make my knot of stiffer material or insert a stiffening liner to give it greater rigidity.

It should now be evident to those skilled in the art that by the use of my invention I am able to rapidly form a four-in-hand knot in a neat and convenient manner utilizing an existing or conventional tie without the trouble of tying and untying each time. I thus eliminate the wear and tear and trouble involved in the latter operation.

It should also be evident to those skilled in the art that I am able to provide various styles of knots to conform with different fashions, such as the Windsor knot or the Half-Windsor knot which are well known to those skilled in the art.

It should also be now evident to those skilled in the art that by the use of my invention a tie may be loosened readily for greater comfort by merely slipping my knot down, as is done with conventional neckties, to relieve pressure or tension around the neck, but generally may not be done with other pre-tied ties which are built to provide some of the advantages which I have enumerated herein.

It should be evident also that while I may provide a knot which conforms to the general coloring or artistic design of existing ties, I may use my construction to provide an entirely different knot and thereby achieve a ready means of effecting many dilferent styles and style combinations.

I have found my invention to be especially versatile and adaptable during times when mens styles change from very narrow to wider ties and vice-versa in that the size and shape of my knot may always be maintained at any particular set standard regardless of the rest of the tie.

I have found also that the knot of my invention maintains its position on the collar more reliably and does not have a tendency to slip or get out of alignment during the wear, since it is independent of the tension used in forming a conventional knot.

I claim:

1. In a cloth necktie of the four-in-hand type the improvement comprising a separate removable knot, said knot being of tapered hollow construction disposed to slide over the loose ends of said necktie and along the length thereof and having a longitudinal split through said hollow construction and along its entire length thereby forming two parallel opposite edges in said knot; said knot comprising a springy material whereby it may be opened and clampedv around said loose ends of said tie and held in a, definite position thereon; means for detachably securing said two parallel opposite edges together.
