IM PROVEM ENT iN TEA-KETTLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 35,Sl, dated July i3, 1862.
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOI-1N A. Gonwnr, of Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Attaching the Covers of Tea- Kettles; and I do hereby declare that the fol'- lowing is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,Y making part of this specification-- Figurel being a plan of a tea-kettle with the cover attached in my improvednianner, and showing the coveropen Fig.2,a central vertical section of aportionoi the same with the cover closed, lthe planeof section being indicated by the line :e or, Eig. i; Fig. 3, a plan of. the teakettle-.with the cover removed and representing the socket or hole in which the steznor pivot of the oo ver fits; Fig. 4, an ede view of tl1e'cover, sho wing more partienlarlyitsstein and iiange.`

The object of my invention is attaching the cover having a side movement-horizontally around an axis to a tea-kettle in such a .'maiiner otherwise than by ordinary riveting that its flange will fall into the opening of the kettle; so as to prevent it from accidentally falling open, and rendering the joint tighter, and'also 4 so that when the bail is secured in its place the cover cannotvbe removed from its fastening without first removing the bail. The cover B of the tea-kettle is of the usual shape in its front and main portion, but 'the rear thereof forms a proj eetion, C, for furnishing a bearing to iit on the seat c of 'the tea-kettle, and a stem or pivot for fitting in its socket. prevents the cover from being turned suffi ciently to remove the stem from its socket. Thus the-lug g, by holding under the edge of the metal, prevents the cover being rernoved from the teakettle, while at'the'sanie time it does not interfere in the least with its free turning motion.v rlhe cover thus used in eonnection with the bail is always retained in place and is in no danger of falling clit'.
'In addition to the advantages above de scribed, when. the cover'is broughtin position over the opening c of the tea-kettle the action is such, the stem having proper play in the sockel',` that vits ordinary iiange lc falls and tits into its seat in 'the usual manner oi' a removable cover. By this means the cover forms a nearlystealn-tight joint and is always retained in place,l so that there is no danger of its fall'- ing on one side and scalding the hand of the vperson using the teakettle by thehot steam.
This is a great advantage over covers turning i horizontally around an axis and riveted in the usual manner, for in such devices the flange 7c cannot -be used, the coversQwhich are made with niiet under surface) merely moving over and covering the opening,nnd thereby leaving n loose joint, having a liability to fell to one side by the accidental turning of the kettle, whereby the hand of the operator is subject to sealding hy the het steam. However closely such n cover may be made toiitat rst,its ordinary rivet soon wenrs loose, so Athat it will not retain its position with any degree of safety. Bymy-ixnproved arrangement all these (liftieulties are obviated. This arrangement enables the cover to be fitted entirely by casting, the lug only being filed at the upper end,

What I elninr asmy invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A1. The combination of the stem f nndsocket Z with the tlnnge kof the tezykettle cover, so arranged that when the cover has moved over the opening in the kettle the ange k will fall therein, substantially in the manner and for the purposes herein described.
2. Attaching the cover to the ten'kettle by means of the stem fand socket b in such a manner that whenthe bail D is raised it ennnot be removed from its place,substnnt'inllyns herein described. Y
