LOCKING ATTACHMENT FOR FAUCETS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 1,1912.
Application filed May 29, 1911. Serial No. 630,190.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. SHEP- HARD, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Waukesha, in the county of Waukesha and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Looking Attachments for Faucets; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention consists in what is herein particularly set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims of this specification, its object being to provide simple, economical and eflicient means for locking the plug of an ordinary faucet in cut-off posit-ion.
Figure l of the drawings represents a front elevation of an ordinary faucet, partly in section, having the plug thereof lockedv in cut-01f position by means in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, a plan view of the faucet and a shackle therewith, a padlock in this figure being shown by dotted lines. Fig. 3, a horizontal sectional view of the faucet fitting shackle shown in the other views.
Referring by numerals to the drawings, 4 indicates the shell, 5 the plug and 6 the plughandle of an ordinary faucet, the plug being in out off position. Slipped onto the depending plug-case portion of the faucet, back of its spout, is the lower box-like socketend 7 of a shackle having an arm 8 that constitutes an upward inclined continuation of a wall of the socket, its inclination being such as to readily clear the rim 9 of the plugcase portion of the faucet-shell. The upper end of the shackle-arm is provided with a pair of parallel wings 10 having registering apertures therein, and the plug-handle of the faucet is caught between the wings. The bow 11 of a padlock is caught in the apertures of the shackle-wings above the plughandle of the faucet, and said handle cannot be manipulated to open said faucet until the padlock is detached from the shackle and said shackle permitted to drop away from said faucet.
The shackle is preferably a' one piece casting of any suitable metal, and it may be made in sizes corresponding to those of faucets, but it is economical practice to employ malleable iron as the material for the shackle-castingand provide a socket-wall, the opposite arm aforesaid or both with branches 12 designed to be bent inward'to impinge against the shell of a faucet to which said shackle is applied, said bent in branches serving to prevent play of the aforesaid shackle and faucet-plug handle engaged therewith.
The shackle is provided with stiffening ribs 13, 14 and-its socket portion is provided with a bottom drainopening 15. A saving of metal and a reduction of weight may be effected by casting the shackle with openings in front and rear sides of its socket portion.
I claim:
1. A faucet-plug shackle comprising a stiffened box-like socket for the engagement of the lower portion of a faucet-shell, an arm extending upward at an inclination from a wall of the socket to clear the rim of the plug-case portion of said shell, and a pair of parallel wings at the upper end of the arm with which to straddle the handle of the plug, the wings being apertured for the reception of the bow of a padlock above said handle.
2. A faucet-plug shackle comprising a stiffened box-like socket for the engagement of the lower portion of a faucetshell, an arm extending upward at any inclination from a wall of the socket to clear the rim of the plug-case portion of said shell, and having branches designed to be bent in against said shell, and a pair of parallel wings at the upper end of the arm with which to straddle the handle of the plug, the wings being apertured for the reception of the-bow of a padlock above said handle.
3. A faucet-plug shackle comprising a stiffened box-like socket for the engagement of the lower portion of a faucet-shell, an arm extending upward at an inclination from a wall of the socket to clear the rim of the plug-case portion of said shell, branches of the socket-wall opposite the arm designed to be bent in against said shell, and a pair of parallel wings at the upper end of the arm. with which tostraddle the handle of the plug, the wings being apertured for the reception of the bow of a padlock above said handle.
4:. A faucet-plug shackle comprising a stiffened box-like socket for the engagement of the lower portion of a faucet-shell, an arm extending upward at an inclination from a wall of the socket to clear the rim of the plug-case portion of said shell, and havin branches designed to be bent in against said shell, other branches of an opposite wall of said socket designed for a similar'purhave hereunto set my hand at Waukesha in pose, and a pair of parallel Wings at the upthe county of VVaukesha and State 01 Wisper end of the arm with Which to straddle consin in the presence of two Witnesses. the handle of the plug, the Wings being WILLIAM A. SHEPHARD. 5 apertured for the reception of the bow of a Witnesses:
padlock above said handle. FLORENCE GERRITT,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I WM. H. HARDY, Jr.
