SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent; No. 357,894, dated February 15, 1887.

comotives, it is found that under my prior construction it is not always possible to so place the steam and water distributing pipes as to discharge their contents at the desired point, and, while serving the purposes for which it was designed, I find that it is necessary to change the construction of the former device so that it may be applied to all forms or makes of locomotives.
To this end the present invention consists in swiveling orjournaling one or both of the distributing-pipes so that the steam or water, or both, may be directed to any desired point within the ash-pan.
In the drawings, Figure l is an end view of a boiler, showing my improvements applied thereto; Fig. 2, a side view of the same, partly in section; and Figs. 3 and 4, detail views.
A indicates a steam-boiler, B the ash-pan thereof, 0 the slatted bottom of the ash-pan, and D and E the levers for shaking or dumping the grateand the slatted bottom of the ash pan, all of which partsmay be of the usual construction.
F indicates a two-way val ve, which is screwed into the boiler-head, the valve being provided with two valve-plugs, Grand H, which control the supply of steam and water. A pipe, I, extends from the inner end of the valve F down into the water in the boiler, the pipe being of such length as to allow it to be at all times in the water.
The valve F is open at its lower end-that is to say, the steam-passage of the valve is open so as to be in communication with the steam-' space of the boiler, as in my patent above referred to. The steam and water passages of the valve openinto or communicate with a chamber in the valve, as in my former patent, and

from this chamber apipe, J, extends downward along the end of the boiler, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. At its lower end the pipe J is provided with two branch pipes, K K, by which it is connected with pipes L and M, which latter extend lengthwise of the ash-pan, as shown in Fig. 2. The pipe L is placed up close to the under side of the grate, while the pipe M is somewhat lower down', both pipes L M, however, being perforated along their opposing faces, and closed at one end.
In the drawings I have shown only one of the pipes, L, as adapted to be rocked; but I wish it understood that I do not limit myself to the arrangement of only one pipe in such manner, as it is obvious that in some cases it may be found desirable to thus arrange both of the pipes L and M. In order to allow or permit the pipe to be rocked, I adopt the construction shown in Fig. 4.
Upon the end of pipe L is screwed an elongated collar or tube, N, which has at one end a laterally-projecting flange, a, the tube N being encircled by a sleeve or ring, 0, which is secured thereto by means of a set-screw, b, or
in any equivalent manner.
P indicatesa reducing-nut, adapted to screw at one end upon-the curved elbow secured to pipe K, and at the other end to pass over the tube N, the opening in the nut P to receive the latter being ofsuch size as to accurately fit the exterior of the tube. The inner face of the nut P is recessed or socketed to receive and seat the flange a, so that when the nut is screwed up upon the elbow it will draw the tube N and the pipe L secured thereto up close to the elbow and make a tight joint and preventleakage.
While permitting the parts to be brought together to form a tight joint, this construe tion permits the pipe L and its tube N to be turned or rocked. In order to thus rock or oscillate the pipe L, I employ a hand-lever, Q, which is pivoted at one end to the end of the boiler, and connected by means of a rod or pitman, R, with an arm, S, formed upon the collar or ring 0, as shown inFigs. 1 and 2. By raising or lowering the hand-lever the pipe will be rocked, and the perforations in the pipe brought into such position as may be desired.
When it is desired todischarge either steam or water, or both, into the ash-pan, the valve is opened as required, and the steam or water, or both, pass through the pipes J K into the pipes L and M, and through the perforations in the latter.
Where only one pipe, L or M, is employer], the pipe J will be connected directly with said pipe, the branch pipes or extensions K of the pipe Jbeing used only when both pipes L and M are employed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is i t 1. In combination with aboiler and an ashpan therefor, a valve communicating with the steam-space and the water-space of the boiler, a pipeeonnected to said valve extending into the ash-pan and provided with perforations, and means, substantially such as shown, for rocking said pipe upon its axis.
2. In combination with boiler A and ash pan B, valve F and pipe J, arranged and op erating substantially as described, perforated distributing-pipe L,located within the ashpan and connected with pipe J, and a hand-lever, Q, connected with said pipe L and adapted to rock the same.
3. In combination with boiler A and ashpan B, valve F and pipe J, all arranged for operation substantially as shown, perforated pipe L, provided with flanged tube N and arm S, a nut, P, adapted to fit upon the tube N and to connect the latter to the pipe J, and a hand-lever connected with the arm S, substantially as described.
4. In combination with boiler A and ashpan B, a twowvay valve, F, adapted to receive steam or water from the boiler, a pipe, J, connected with said valve, a perforated pipe, L, connected with pipe J, located within the ashpan and adapted to be rocked or oscillated upon its longitudinal axis, a hand-lever, Q, journaled upon the boiler, and a link or bar, 1%, connecting the hand-lever with the rocking pipe.
5. In combination with a boiler and ash-pan therefor, a supply-pipe communicating with the steam-space and the water-space of the boiler and provided with a valve, and a perforated pipe placed within the ash-pan and adapt-ed to be rotated upon its longitudinal axis, said perforated pipe being connected with the supply-pipe.
