A. LINDELL.
WAGON STAKE. No. 343,960. Patented June lfi, 1886.
C A/ WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT OFF CE.
AUGUST LINDELL, OF JEFFERSON, IOWA.
WAGON-STAKE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 343,960, dated June 15, 1886.
Application filed March 20, 1886. Serial No. 196,001.
10 aZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST LINDELL, of Jefferson, in the county of Greene and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in "Wagon-Stakes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to wagon-stakes, the primary object being to provide a stake of cheap, durable, and simple construction adapted to be readily applied to the end of a bolster without mortising, recessing, or other wise weakening the bolster.
A further object of the invention is to provide a wagon-bolster with a stake of superior strength, and one that will afford awide bearing for both the side and bottom of the wagon-body, thus preventing undue wear of the body by the frictional contact of the stake and body, as occurs when narrow stakes are employed.
A further object of the invention is to combine with a bolster a stake having an integral brace and an integral securing plate and flange.
The invention consists in the various features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved wagon-stake secured to the end of a bolster. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the same.
A represents the end of a bolster, preferably rounded, as shown.
B represents the base-plate of the stake, rounded at one end to conform to the contour of the bolster, and provided with a depending flange, 0, extending nearly around the plate, which is extended some distance beyond the end of the flange to form a broad seat, D, for the bottom of the wagon.
E represents the stake set at right angles to the length of the plate B, and extending at its base across the latter.
The stake tapers from bottom to top, and is provided with a right-angle brace, F, which (No model.)
extends throughout the length of the stake on its outer side, its lower end joining the plate 13, while its inner side joins the center of the stake E, as shown. This brace F is curved from its base to its upper end at its outer side, and affords a strong base-support for the stake, as well as a continuous longitudinal re-enforcement. One side of the brace F is formed with openings f, which are adapted to receive rings 9, to facilitate the attachment of supplemental stakes when necessary.
It will be apparent from the foregoing description that I provide a very strong stake, and one which affords ample wide bearingfaces for contact with the wagon-body.
I preferably form all of the parts of the stakeviz., the base, flange, stake proper, and re-enforcing brace-integral, so that the whole device may be supplied to the trade as a single complete article of manufacture.
In addition to its general utility, I have found that my device is specially adapted for use in repairing vehicles where stakes are to be renewed, in view of the fact that it may be readily slipped over the end of the bolster, and secured without mortising the latter.
The device is held in place securely by means of screws h, passed through the inner extension of the plate B, and by a transverse bolt, H, passed through the flange and bolster, as shown, said flange embracing and fitting the end of the bolster.
I am aware that it is not broadly new to provide a wagon-standard with a depending flange to embrace the end of the bolster. I am also aware that such depending flange has been extended inwardly on each side beyond the stake; hence I do not broadly claim such a securing-flange, .but my invention is distinguished from those heretofore used by the employment of a broad flat tapering stake, E, and peculiarly-arranged brace F, in connection with the flange O and its bolt, and the inward extension D.
I claim The combination, with a bolster, of a standard consisting of a base and a depending flange, a stake, E, formed wide at its base and tapering upward, a broad inward extension, D, of
the base joined to the inner upper edges of In testimony whereof I have signed this the flange, "and a re-enforcing brace, F, arspecification in the presence of two subscrib-. ranged at a right angle to the stake and eX- ing witnesses. I
tending throughout the length of the latter AUGUST LINDELLQ 5 and tapering from the outer edge of the base Witnesses;
to the upper end of the stake, and a trans- M. L. STEELE,
verse bolt, substantial'lyas described. I W. S. LIVINGSTON.
