SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 617,157, dated January 3, 1899.
Application filed March 8, 1898. Serial No. 673,077. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES W. I-IEMM, of Kendall, in the county of Kendall and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vagons, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide certain new and useful improvements in wagons whereby an ordinary farm-wagon can be readily transformed into a hay-wagon by the use of a simple fixture easily applied to the running-gear of the wagon to support the hayrack securely and firmly in position.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as Will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improvement as applied. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged side elevation of the improvement detached. Fig. 4. is an edge view of the same, and Fig. 5 is a sectional plan View of the same on the line 5 5 of Fig. 3.
The wagon on which the improvement is applied is provided with the usual side beams A, resting on the bolsters B of the runninggear, and on the said side beams are secured fixtures 0, all alike in construction and arranged in pairs placed opposite each other on the two beams, as will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 2. Each of the fixtures G is provided with a body portion extending against the outer face of the side beam and bolted thereto by transverse bolts D to securely hold the fixtures in place on the beam.
On the upper end of the body is arranged a transversely-extending head 0', resting on the top of the beam A, and on the inner end of said head is formed a downwardly-extending flange 0 abutting against theinner face of the beam.
From the lower end of the body portion of the fixture extends downwardly a bolt 0 the side-bars G, for the hay-rack, as is plainly shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The flanges C are strengthened at the front and rear by braces.

rear braces are in alinement with the flange 0 it being understood that the flanges O are spaced far enough apart for the heads and nuts of the bolts H. The bolts II pass through the flanges O and the crossbar F to securely fasten the latter in its place on the seat of the head to prevent lateral movement of the rack in the fixtures.
Now it will be seen that by the arrange ment described the fixtures can be readily attached to the side beams of the running gear, and the cross-bars E can be readily attached to the fixtures to connect the side beams with each other, and the cross-beams of the hay-rack can be readily set into the seats of the fixture and fastened thereto to prevent lateral as well as longitudinal movement of the rack.
The several parts of the fixture are integral, as the fixture is preferably made of malleable iron, the bolt 0 being cast in, so that the fixture can A be readily applied to the running-gear of the wagon to receive and support the hay-rack.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. A Wagon-fixture comprising a body, a head on the upper portion of the body and extending transversely therefrom, and formed at its rear end with a flange for fitting onto the side beam of the running-gear, upwardlyextending flanges carried by the said head, and strengthened by longitudinal braces integral with the body and flush therewith, and a bolt on the lower end of the said fixture, for
