Description

June 6, 1967 L. PERGZOLA 3,323,207
SHAVER HAVING BOTH ELECTRICAL AND SPRING WQUND MECHANICAL DRIVING MEANS MOT'CR RE.C ON
A AW/PE/VC 526 4 Filed Dec. 31, 1964 United States Patent 3,323,207 SHAVER HAVING BOTH ELECTRICAL AND SPRING WOUND MECHANIAL DRIVING MEANS Lawrence Pergzola, 1907 Larkins Way, Pittsburgh, Pa. 15203 Filed Dec. 31, 1964, Ser. No. 422,691 1 Claim. ((11. 3043.92)
My invention is directed toward shavers and more particularly relates to shavers which can be operated either electrically or by action of a spring depending upon the option of the user.
Accordingly, it is an object of my invention to provide a new and improved automatic shaver having a reciprocating cutting head which incorporates both electrically operated and spring wound driving means as well as means manually operable and including a gear train for selectively coupling the head to one or the other driving means as a source of power.
Another object is to provide a new and improved automatic shaver of the character indicated which can be manufactured easily and inexpensively.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of my invention will either be explained or will become apparent hereinafter when this specification is studied together with the accompanying drawings wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a front view of my invention showing certain internal parts in dotted line;
FIGURE 2 is a side view thereof partially cut away;
FIGURE 3 is a rear view of my invention;
FIGURE 4 illustrates the opposed directions of the 7 electrical and spring drives; and
FIGURE 5 is a view of certain of the internal parts of my invention.
Referring now to FIGURES 1-5, there is shown a shaver casing 10 having at its bottom end two pins 12 and 14 adapted to be connected by female plug 16, cable 18 and male plug 20 to a conventional source of single phase alternating current 110 volt supply (not shown). When switch 22 in the casing is turned on, current is supplied to the stator 24 of the electric motor assembly 26. This causes the shaft 28 of the assembly to rotate in the direction shown in FIGURE 4. One end 30 of this shaft 28 extends outside of casing 10. The other end of shaft 28 terminates in a first bevelled gear 38.
A second bevelled gear 32 is connected at the lower end of a vertical shaft 34 which when rotated actuates the reciprocating cutting blade and comb assembly 36 of the shaver for purposes of shaving.
When the motor is operating and the user pushes down upon end 30, gears 38 and 32 are engaged and the shaver is electrically operated in conventional manner.
A second shaft 40 is aligned end to end with 'shaft 28. The end of shaft 40 adjacent gear 38 carries a third bevelled gear 42. The other end of shaft 40 extends outside the casing and terminates in a winding button 44. A spring mechanism 46 is connected to shaft 40. When button 44 and shaft 40 are turned in the same direction as the operating motor shaft, the mechanism is wound. When button 44 is pushed in toward the casing, gear 38 is moved out of engagement with gear 32, but gear 42 is moved into engagement with gear 32, and the shaver is mechanically operated by spring action, the direction of rotation of shaft 34 being in one direction when electrically driven and being reversed when spring driven.
-While I have described my invention with particular reference to the drawings, my protection is to be limited only by the terms of the claim which follows.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
A shaver comprising:
(a) a casing;
(b) a reciprocating cutting head and comb assembly mounted in one end of the casing and disposed in a horizontal plane;
(c) a vertical shaft depending downwards from the assembly and rotatable about its own axis, the top end of the vertical shaft being coupled to said assembly for creating the vreciprocating action thereof when the vertical shaft is rotated;
(d) a first gear secured to the bottom end of the vertical shaft and rotatable therewith in a horizontal plane;
(e) first and second horizontal shafts disposed end to end along a common horizontal axis, said shafts being movable manually back and forth along said axis, each of the horizontal shafts being individually rotatable about the common axis, the adjacent ends of both horizontal shafts being disposed adjacent said first gear;
(f) second and third gears, each being secured to a corresponding adjacent end of a corresponding one of the first and second shafts and rotatable therewith in a vertical plane whereby when the first and second shafts are shifted to a first extreme position along the common axis said second gear engages said first gear and when the first and second shaft are shifted to a second and alternative extreme position along the common axis, said third gear engages the (g) electric motor means which when energized rotates said first shaft;
(h) spring driven means which when wound and released rotates said second shaft;
(i) manually operable means for placing the first and second shafts in either selected one of said extreme positions whereby the appropriate one of the electric and spring means rotates the appropriate one of said first and second shafts to operate said razor.
