J. L. NILSON SHAVING IMPLEMENT Filed March 17, 1937 INVENTOYR. BY ]'om L. /V/slon Patented Jan. 18, 1938 UNITED sTATEs PATENT OEEICE y Claims.
My invention relates to a shaving implement adapted for use as a dry shaver of the motor driven type.
Among the objects of my invention are to pro- 5 vide a shaving implement adapted to give to the user a very close shave; to provide a shaving implement having a combined guard and guide member for positioning the shaving implement on the users face at the proper angle for a close shave and also preventing the implement from cutting the face of the user and at the same time protecting the implement from injury; to create a shaving implement having resilient means for permitting the inner comb to reciprocate against the stationary comb without friction between the reciprocating comb and the resilient member, said resilient member surrounding the driving shaft so as to prevent chattering and to insure an evenly directed pressure on the reciprocating comb; to create a shaving implement which is substantially non-clogging, its parts being so arranged that there are no portions for the retention of clipped hair; to supply a shaving implement more simple in construction and economical of manufacture, and such other objects, advantages and capabilities as will later more fully appear and which are inherently possessed by my invention.
While I have shown in the accompanying drawing a preferred embodiment of my invention, yet I Wish it understood that the same is susceptible of modification and change without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of my shaving implement with a` portion broken away to show the motor; Fig. 2 is a front view of the head of my shaving implement with the retaining plate partly broken away and showing the top portion kof the driving mechanism; Fig. 3 is a side view of the structure shown-in Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a plan detail 40 view, and Fig. 5 is a side view of my spring retaining hearing or button. Fig. 6 is a front detail view of my inner reciprocating comb and Fig. '7 is a side view of the same.
The implement selected to illustrate my invention comprises a hollow handle Il! in which is arranged in any suitable manner an electric motor I I adapted to be connected to an electrical source of supply by lead wires l2. The motor II has a driving shaft 'I3 ending in an eccentric I4 adapted to engage a head I5.
My head I5 comprises a base i5 to which is attached by suitable means such as screws I l, an cuter angle plate i8, the shorter bent portion of which forms a `stationary comb i9. An inner a le plate 2@ is positioned within the interior portion of the outer angle plate I8, the shorter bent portion of said inner angle plate 20 forming a reciprocating comb 2|. A resilient member 22 has one end seated in a reess-23 in the base I6. The other end of the resilient member 22 engages 5 a recess 24 in a button.9 rsprihg retaining bearing 25. Said button 25 has thrust bearings 26 adapted to lie against a pair of lugs 21, said lugs 2l formed from a cutout portion 28 in portion 29 of inner angle plate 20. Said button 25 also has a 10 hub 30 adaptedto t between said lugs 21 for imparting reciprocating movement to the reciprocating comb 2|.
A retaining plate 3l has one end attached by suitable means such as screws 32 to the base I6 l5,
and has a portion 33 bent at a right angle to bear against the inner angle plate 20 to hold the inner angle plate 20 against the outer angle plate I 8, and for sealing the moving' mechanism so that it is protected from cut hair. cuticle matter or 20 the like.
The outer angle plate I8 has a comb I9, the teeth 34 of which form parallel cutting edges 35. 'Ihe comb I9 remains in a stationary position.
In the" comb 2I which lies against the inner side 25 of thestationary comb I9, the teeth 36 form parallel cutting edges 3l. Said inner comb 2I is adapted to be moved in a reciprocating movement through the following construction: The driving shaft I3 passes through an aperture 38 in the base 30 I6 and extends so that the eccentricv I4 is engaged in an elongated pocket 39 in button 25. As the eccentric I4 is actuated and moves the button 25, the hub 30 of the button moves the inner c'omb 2l in a reciprocating movement across the inner 35 surface of the outer comb I9.
The outer comb I9 is knife blade or wedge shaped in that it tapers to an extremely thin front edge 40. The comb I9 having such a thin edge, permits the user to obtain a shave at least 40 as close a's the infinitesimal thickness of said thin edge. Because the comb I9 is so thin at its maximum close shaving contact position, it is desirable for general use to employ a guard guide 4I which I provide in the shape of a substantially U-shaped member, the ends 42 of which removably and frictionally fit into apertures 43 in oppositely disposed sides of the base I6. The connecting portion 44 of the U-shaped guard guide is spaced from the edges of the combs so that a user is guided into a position for a correct close shave and at the same time is guarded against danger from cutting due to too close a shave. 'Ihe guard guide also protects the combs from injury. 5e
The inner exposed face 45 of my reciprocating comb 2I permits the free and immediate escape of cut hair'. My head l5 is so constructed that it has open front and sides adjacent the inner exposed face 45 of my reciprocating comb 2 I.
' There are no pockets into which cut hair may accumulate to clog and even stall working parts. My head vhaving no such pockets, needs no extraneous cleaning devices for the removal of cut kgreater -thanthe stroke of the reciprocating comb v 2l so that the resilient member 22 may oscillate free from contactv with the driving shaft I3. My
In operation the-'hair of a person shaving enters the slots 46 of comb I9 and the slots 41 of comb 2 I,
and are clip ed by the reciprocating action of the inner comb 2| against the outer comb I9.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
