United States Patent 3,308,942 WRITING PORTFOLIO Russell C. Johnson, Indian Hill, and Gordon C. Bess, Sycamore Township, Hamilton County, Ohio, assignors to R. C. Johnson, 1110., Cincinnati, Ohio, a corporation of Ohio Filed Dec. 4, 1963, Ser. No. 327,989 6 Claims. (Cl. 206-63) This invention relates to a folder or portfolio for holding writing paper and envelopes and the like.
Such folders are generally of simple construction and can be formed of paperboard or the like. They can be opened or closed, but if there is more than a single thickness of material of which the folder is formed, the material tends to bunch up and to become deformed along the line of fold. An object of this invention is to provide a folder having outer and inner layers which can be opened and closed without bunching up or deforming at the lines of fold.
A further object of this invention is to provide such a folder in which the inner layer folds independently of the outer portion.
A further object of this invention is to provide a folder of this type in which the inner layer includes two portions and in which portions of the inner layer are attached to inner and outer portions of the outer layer and in Which the inner layer includes a telescoping portion at the location of folds which can be folded independently of the outer layer.
The above and other objects and features of the invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art to which this invention pertains from the following detailed description, and the drawings, in which:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view showing a folder constructed in accordance with an embodiment of this invention, a portion of an outer covering sheet being broken away to reveal details of construction;
FIG. 2 is a plan view of the folder illustrated in FIG. 1 with the folder being shown in open position, lines of scoring being indicated in dot-dash lines;
FIG. 3 is a plan view of a blank from which an envelope holding insert thereof is formed, an adhesive area being indicated by stippling;
FIG. 4 is a plan view of a blank from which a body portion of the folder is formed;
FIG. 5 is a perspective view showing the body forming blank in partly folded position;
FIG. 6 is a perspective view of the envelope holding insert in folded position;
FIG. 7 is a view in transverse section of the envelope holding insert;
FIG. 8 is an enlarged fragmentary top plan view, partly broken away and in section, showing details of construction of a hinge portion thereof;
FIG. 9 is an enlarged fragmentary transverse sectional view of the hinge section showing the holder in folded position; and
FIG. 10 is a fragmentary enlarged transverse sectional View showing the folder in open position.
In the following detailed description, and the drawing like reference characters indicate like parts.
In FIG. 1 is shown a folder which includes front and rear walls 10 and 12 and a back wall 13. The front and rear walls can be swung between the closed position shown in FIGS. 1 and 9 and an open position shown in FIGS. 2, 8 and 10. A pad of writing paper 14 is mounted on the rear wall 12 (FIG. 2), and a holder 16 for envelopes 17 is mounted on the front wall 10. When the folder is in the open position of FIG. 2 the pad of writing paper 14 is exposed and available for writing letters or the like. When the folder is in closed position, the pad of writing paper and the envelopes are substantially concealed and the folder can be stored on a shelf or the like in the usual manner.
The body of the folder is formed from a blank 18 illustrated in detail in FIGS. 4 and 5. The blank 18- includes an inner rear panel 19, an outer rear panel 21, an outer back panel 22, an outer front panel 23, an inner front panel 24, an inner back panel 26, and a telescoping flap 27, all of which are formed from a single sheet of paperboard or the like and which are separated by lines of fold 28, 29, 31, 32, 33, and 34. A transverse out line 36 is formed in the inner front panel 24 and extends crosswise of the panel terminating short of outer edges thereof. The blank 18 is folded through the position shown in FIG. 5 to the position shown in FIG. 2 in which inner and outer front and rear panels are in face to face position. Top and bottom edges of the inner and outer front panels are attached together by staples 37 or the like. In a similar manner top and bottom edges of the inner and outer rear panels are joined together by staples 38. An outer decorative facing sheet of paper or the like 39 can be adhesively attached to the outer faces of the outer front, back and rear panels to give a decorative outer facing and to cover the staples as indicated most clearly in FIG. 1.
As shown most clearly at FIGS. 2 and 8, the telescoping flap 27 fits between the inner and outer rear panels 19 and 21 in a telescoping relation therewith so that, as the folder is swung between the open position of FIGS. 2, 8, and 10 and the closed position of FIGS. 1 and 9,
.the flap 27 slides inwardly and outwardly with the lines of fold 33 and 34 on opposite sides of the inner back panel 26 being spaced from the lines of fold 31 and 29 on opposite sides of the outer back panel 22 when the folder is in the open position as indicated in FIG. 8 but into alignment therewith when the folder is in the closed position of FIG. 9.
The pad of writing paper 14 can be of the usual type and can include an outer sheet of paperboard 41 and sheets of paper 42 mounted thereon. The paperboard sheet 41 is adhesively attached to the inner rear panel 19 as shown most clearly in FIG. 10.
The envelope holder 16 is formed from a blank 44 shown in FIG. 3 which includes a body panel 46, a bottom panel 47, a central panel 48, a bridging panel 49, and an insert tab 51 which are mounted in tandem and are separated by fold lines 52, 53, 54, and 56. Hinged to opposite edges of the central panel 48 are end panels 57 and 58 which are defined by score lines 59 and 61 and 62 and 63 respectively. Hinged to the end panel 57 is a glue tab 64. Hinged to the end panel 58 is an interior panel 66. Filler tabs 67 and 68 are hinged to the end panels 57 and 58 respectively. A slot 69 is formed in the body panel 46 to receive the insert tab 51. The envelope holdor 16 can be folded to the position shown in FIG. 6 in which the glue tab 64 is adhesively attached to the interior panel 66 and the tab 51 extends through the slot 69 with the body panel 46 and the interior panel 66 in face-to-face relation. A mounting extension 71, forming a part of the 'body panel 46 can be extended through the slot 36 of the inner front panel 24 to mount the envelope holder 16 in the position shown in FIG. 2 at which the envelopes 17 can be inserted therein.
The folder illustrated in the drawings and described above is subject to structural modification without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
