Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
MIGUEL DE LA VEGA, OF NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO J. M. COX, OF BROOKLYN, NEWV YORK.
MANUFACTURE OF SUGAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 330,098, dated NovemberlO, 1885.
Application filed March 27, 1885. Serial No. 160,263.
I 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MIGUEL DE LAVEGA, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Manufacture of Sugar, of which the following is a full, clear, and accurate description.
The object of my invention is to save time and fuel in the operation of concentrating the sirup, thus enabling the finished product to be produced much cheaper.
My invention consists in adding to the solution of sugar-sirup, cane-sirup, sorghumjuice, molasses, 850., after said solution has been purified, or What is technically termed after defecation has taken place, certain proportions of anhydrous alcohol, and subjecting this mixture to the ordinary concentrating process, adding, before it reaches the point of sirup, crystallized sugar and a little more alcohol.
When the solution is at the point of sugaring, more sugar is added, and when the sirup reaches from 42 to 43 Baum aerometer the sirup is removed and the crystallization is finished asusual. I find that a good formula for carrying out this process is to every one (No specimens.)
hundred gallons of sirup, &c., to add one-tenth of a gallon of anhydrous alcohol, and While the boiling is going on, as before stated, to add 30 two pounds of well-crystallized sugar to every hundred gallons of sirup, and one ounce of alcohol. At the crystallization-point a very small quantity of sugar may be added, and the judgment of the one conducting the op- 5 eration Will be the best guide to the quantity needed.
I do not intend to confine myself to the above proportions, but they may be varied according to the nature of the saccharine so- 40 lution.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
The method of making sugar herein de- 5 scribed, consisting in adding to the saccharine solution in process of solution alcohol and sugar, as above set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 26th day of March, 1885.
MIGUEL DE LA VEGA.
In presence of- CHARLES G. 00E, R. F. VAN BOSKEROK.
