CARRIAGE FOR ROCK-DRILLS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 337,898, dated March 16, 1886.

To aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES J. VAN DE- PoELE,a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drill-Carr ages, of which the following is a specifica tion, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of a rock or mining drill and its carriage constructed according to my improvement; and Fig. 2 is a central transverse vertical section through the line :0 :r, Fig. 1.
This invention relates more particularly to an improvement in that class of drill-carriages in which the operating parts are mounted on trunnions on a platform or other support, movable or otherwise; and the invention consists in the peculiar combinations and the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter more particularly described, and pointed out in the claims.
Referring now to the drawings, A represents the operating-cylinder of the machine, which may be of any known kind, and B is the piston or core carrying and giving motion to the rod or drill b. On each side of this cylinder is a groove or guide, 0, of any appropriate form or construction, but preferably of dovetail shape, which receives a bar, D, shaped to (it thegroove, provided with a handle, d.
Between the front end of each bar and a lug, a, near the head of the cylinder is placed a spring, E, which acts to receive the recoil caused by the blow of the drill.
- On each bar D is a slide, F, having, preferably,a dovetail'shaped recess fitting the bar D, which can be secured in any desired position thereon by a set-screw, G, and this slide carries a journal, H, preferably formed integral therewith, fitting in bearings in the standard I on a platform, J, which platform is pivotally mounted on the carriage K, so as to turn on the bolt L.
The carriage may be provided with any suitable number of wheels, M; but I prefer to use fourone in front, one in the rear, and one on each side.
At the rear of the carriage I provide a footpiece, 0, against which the operator presses his foot when the machine is in operation, to feed the engine forward as the work progresses.
By this construction a very convenient carriage for drills or similar tools may be made, as by means of the platform turning on the king-bolt L the cylinder and its drill can be turned horizontally to any required degree, while the trunnions will allow of the point of the drill being arranged to strike at any desirable angle to the horizon.
By adjusting the slides F on the bars D the cylinder may be made to keep the point of the drill upward or downward, according to the position the slides occupy with respect to the center of gravity of the cylinder.
\Vhen in operation, the engine is mounted on the rails or a suitable platform, or the ground, as the case may be, and the operator sits behind the machine with his foot or feet against the foot-piece O,aud,with his hands on the handle d, directs the point of the drill in the desired position, pushing the carriage forward with his feet as the work progresses. The springs take up the recoil caused by the blow of the drill, and this prevents the shock that would otherwise be given to the hands and feet of the operator at each blow.
It is obvious that these appliances may be used with drilling-machines of forms other than that shown without departing from the spirit of my invention, for in lieu of the cylinder referred to in the drawings and specification, which may represent an air or steam cylinder or a solenoid, any other apparatus or frame used for holding or driving a drill may be used; and where i use the word cylinder or drill-cylinder in the following claims I mean to be understood as covering such driltoperating frame or apparatus.
Some of the features shown and claimed in this application are shown but not claimed in my application Serial No. 155,246, filed February 7, 1885.
\Vhat I claim as new is 1. The combination, in a drillingmachine, and with the cylinder and the journals thereof and their supports, of a spring interposed between said cylinder and journals to take up the recoil, substantially as described.
2. The combination, in a drillii'ig-machine, and with the cylinder thereof, of journals yieldingly connected to said cylinder, to allow the latter to move independently of the jour= nals, substantially as described.
3. The combination, in a drilling-machine, and with the drill-cylinder thereof, of the bars D, working in guides therein, and provided with the springs E, interposed between the ends of the bars and the cylinder, substantially as described.
4. The combination, in a drilling-machine, and with the drill-cylinder thereof, of the bars D, working in guides therein and carrying the journals H, mounted in suitable supports, substantially as described.
5. The combination, in a drilling-machine, and with the drill-cylinder thereof, of the bars D. working in guides therein and carrying the adjustable journals H, substantially as described.
6. The combination, in a drilling-machine, and with the drill-cylinder thereof, of the bars D, working in guides therein, and the journals carried by said bars and mounted on the standards I, substantially as described.
7. The combination, in a drilling-machine, and with the cylinder thereofiof the bars D, working in guides therein, the journals H, carried by said bars and mounted in the standards I, and the springs E, interposed between the bars and the cylinder, substantially as vdescribed.
8. A four-wheeled drill-carriage having two of its wheels arranged one in advance of and the other in the rear of the other two, substantially as described.
9. A four-wheeled drill-carriage having two of its wheels arranged one in advance of and the other in the rear of the other two, in combination. with a foot-piece, 0, attached to the rear of said carriage,substantially as described. 0
