To all who 1n it may concern:
Be it known that f, FRANoIs A. JIMERSON,
a citizen of the United States, and a res1-' dent of Athens, county of Bradford, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain Bonding Drill, of which the following is a specification, accompanied by drawings.
This invention relates to bonding drills, adapted more particularly for boring holes in rails, and the objects of the invention are to produce a drill of this character, which may be conveniently operated, and which is simple in its construction, so that holes may be readily bored in rails in a minimum length of time and with a minimum expenditure of labor and trouble.
Further objects will hereinafter appear and the invention is shown in one of its preferred forms in the drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bonding drill, and
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the bonding drill shown in Figure 1, partly in horizontal section and partly broken away.
Referring to the drawings, a pair of base members A are each formed with a flange B between which is secured a bracket 0 as by angle plates D, (only one of which is shown) and a sector E which is formed with a plurality of gear teeth F, is pivotally mounted on the bracket C. A handle G is preferably secured to the sector E and serves as a means for actuating the sector. A pair of side straps H are in this instance secured to the brackets C as by rivets J, and ex tend outwardly from the bracket and are bowed as at K. A rod L braces and maintains the side straps H in separated relationship, and a pair of plates 0 are each preferably formed with a pair of vertical slots P, having means for adjusting the plates relatively to the outer ends of the straps H, in the form of bolts R and nuts S adapted to hold the plates Q in their adjusted position. A recess T is formed in each of the plates Q which are adapted to fit over the rail U for the purpose hereinafter described.
A pair of carriage plates V are formed with recesses W, in their ends, which fit over the side straps K for sliding movement thereon. A fluid actuated rotary drill having a casing X, a motive fluidsupply Y, and a throttle control handle Z, and provided with a bit a fitting into the chuck b, is clamped by the bolts 0 and nuts d between the carriage plates V. A rack e is secured to one end of the rotary drill, as by a cotter pin f, and meshes with the gear teeth F of the sector E.
By rocking the handle G rearwardly, the drill bit a of the rotary drill may be fed forward and held to its work' against the rail U, and by rocking the handle forwardly the bit may be moved from its work. By adjusting the side straps H vertically on the rail plates Q, the position of the bit a may be varied in accordance with the position of the hole desired. Although I have shown one particular form of a fluid ac-' tuated rotary drill, any other suitable form may be substituted therefor, in order to accomplish the same results, but in this instance, the drill may be operated by turning the throttle control handle Z in one direction.
I claim:
1. As an article of manufacture, a bonding drill comprising base members, a bracket connected to the base members, a sector pivoted to the bracket and provided with a plurality of gear teeth, a handle for actuating the sector, side straps connected to the bracket, adjustable plates adapted to engage a rail mounted on the outer ends of said straps for adjusting said straps vertically relative to said rail, a rotary drill slidably mounted on the side straps and a rack meshing with the teeth on the sector for moving the drill horizontally on the side straps to and from the rail.
2. As an article of manufacture, a bonding drill comprising base members, a bracket connected to said base members, a sector pivoted to said bracket and provided with gear teeth, a handle for actuating said sector, side straps connected to said bracket, adjustable plates adapted to engage a rail mounted on the outer ends of said straps for adjusting said straps vertically relative to said rail, a pair of carriage plates slidably mounted on said side straps, a rotary dril adapted to be clamped between said carriage plates, and a rack connected to one end of said drill and meshing with the teeth on said sector for moving said drill to and from the rail.
