SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.323,026, dated July 281 1885.

.To all whom it may concern.-

Beit known that I, VILLIAM M. DUGKER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Match-Box and Cigar-Gutter; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference thereon, which form part of this specification.

My invention has for its object an improved match-box and cigar-cutter.

As heretofore constructed, match-boxes have usually had one spring at the back of the box, extending down into it, which operated to throw back the lid, and another spring extending into the box against the front thereof, which carried the snap for holding the lid when the box was closed. To operate this spring an opening was made in the front of the box,and a thumb piece or button attached to the catch or snap spring projected through this opening and was pressed inward to release the lid.

By my invention I do away with springs within the match-box, and in place thereofI I arrange a suitable tube and orice to receive the end ofthe cigar, so that it may be cut off by a cutter operatedl by the lid of the box, and I arrange such a cutter so that it shall act as a spring to throw open the lid of the box, and also draw the cutter away from the cigarreceiving orifice.

Figure l is a side view of a match-box with one side removed, showing my invention, the box having the lid open. Fig. 2 is a corresponding view with the lid closed. Fig. 3 is a view from the back of the box, with the back removed to show the arrangement of the cigar-receiving tubes.-

A is a match-box, formed out of any suitable material, and is the lid, hinged to the back of the box in any convenient manner.

The cigar-receiving orifice consists of the tube a', which is suitably attached to one side of the box, with a corresponding opening in the other side of the box, at which the end of the cigar is inserted.

When the box is made of very thin material, it may be well to insert a strengthening or thickening ring, a2, in that side of the box near which the knife operates, as shown in Fig. 3. The knife b is arranged to cut at or near one side ofthe box, as shown, and therefore the tube a need not be as large as in boxes where the cutter works at a point equidistant from the sides, and provision must be made for the thicker. part of the cigar. This construction may therefore be followed with advantage with the smaller-that is, narrower-boxes.

The knife or cutter b is suitably hinged with the lid, and has a portion of vits material, b2, drawn out or thinned, so as to form a spring integral therewith. This end may be conveniently twisted and fastened to the lid in any suitable manner, and when so secured it is operated by closing the lid ot' the box,

which action forces it (the knife) across the cigar-receiving orifice.

Boxes made according to this my invention have but few parts, and are very simple in construction. Thematch-chamberisfreefrom springs and rivets, the lid may be made very shallow, and the knife easily arranged within it. In this structure there is not as much inaterial used in the springoperated knife and the cigar-tube a 'as is used in the old structures for the lid-spring alone, and with this cutter hinged with the lid and contained therein, and adapted to be moved'across the cigarreceiving passage by the movement of said lid, and a spring formed integral with the cutter,and secured to the lid and acting to throw back the lid,and also to carry the cutter away from the ci gar-receiving passage when the box is open, as set forth.
